Dex is the primary stat in archery. Wis plays importance, but Dex is the key element. I've been meaning to get a proficiencies list up (along with a list of elemental capabilities) but a lot has been going on, and I've been GMing about ten different things, so it's been taking a while. The proficiencies are going to play a certain role in coming events and quests. Characters with appropriate Fitness trainings will be able to handle certain environments and weather conditions, like proceeding through a snowstorm where others couldn't, etc. Leadership WILL have an affect on troops and troop stats, as well as units people can lead outside of having a faction, but that'll be implemented only when I get the proficiencies list up. There's going to be a use for all of them, and they'll be implemented ICly, at least in anything I'll be GMing. That's exactly what I was wondering! Thanks for the clarification, big guy.

So it's purely an RP aspect? I can see the RP usage of them, in most cases, but certain things don't seem like they do anything, if that makes any sense. Leadership, for example...I read the part of Factions that states how many troops you get based on Wis and Str, but Leadership says "more people will follow you". So, does this increase any type of quest followers (like SPQs or quests that have troop counts) or troop recruitment in general? Like...B-Rank being the requirement, would having A-Rank or S-Rank in Leadership grant a bonus to starting troops? Same for the other profiencies. There's no real measure of stealth or marksmanship in the game, so I'm not sure what having either proficiency would do in the game. Do I get RP consideration in events that require stealth or marksmanship, and that's the extent of the effects? Or does Marksmanship grant some universal bonus to using ranged weapons in events?
I guess...I understand what they are and what they do in terms of their description, I just don't know how they actively effect anything we actually DO. Like...aside from saying "I have Fitness - Rank B" and RP'ing as being super fit, for example, does having Fitness - Rank B actually give me any type of benefit in in-game events? I know this isn't a mechanics-heavy site like I'm used to, and I'm not trying to pick apart aspects of the game, but I want to understand how proficiencies actually effect things in the game. If they're entirely RP badges to gauge how good characters are at these particular subjects, that's fine, I just want to clarify for myself >.>

I have a question AND a suggestion. Busy day!
Question: What do proficiencies do? Aside from Leadership B being required for claiming a faction, I'm - at the risk of sounding like a dummy - not sure what they do.
Suggestion: Add a list of proficiencies and their effects (and maybe the line of SPQs they're based in) to the Stats thread in the Rules area, or their own post?

Satsumaru leaned slightly on the shovel, admittedly a little tired from digging the grave. He was in excellent physical condition, but the truth remained that he wasn't a physical titan. He took a moment to consider the daimyo's proposal.
The ronin didn't necessarily have anything planned for the moment, but he wasn't so sure on the idea of being permanently attached to a single force. Satsumaru still felt that he was learning a lot in his travels, by taking on obstacles he wouldn't normally be put up against. They weren't grand or landscape-changing, of course. He wasn't conquering territory or being credited with major battles, but there was another sort of learning in the wide range of tasks he accomplished on a smaller scale.
But...surprisingly, Takehiro didn't demand permanent loyalty or service. Whether he knew it or not, that was the deal-breaker.
"I'm not currently set on anything in particular, so perhaps we could come to an agreement. I could work as your strategist for a contracted period of time. A monthly agreement would probably work best for both of us. If, at any time, you feel like you no longer require my services, you may discharge me. If, on the other hand, I feel that I am better off elsewhere, I have the opportunity to leave after I serve my contracted time," the long-haired ronin proposed.
Giving a shrug, he added, "And if, by some chance, we meet with some sort of great success and it seems like I'm better off tied to your banner, then so be it."
He was honest. His words weren't rude or cold, but held a tone of respectful honesty. Satsumaru didn't want to take a position permanently that neither he nor the daimyo were sure he would thrive in. A contract that allowed easy renewal and cancellation would give them both a place to start.

Satsumaru's heart felt like it had forgotten to beat. The die had been cast (figuratively and OOC literally*), and now, it was time for the real work. The ambush had been successful. The unruly mess of bandits had see most of their number slaughtered in the surprise attack. The battle was headed for a more pitched state, however...
Trying to take the initiative, Satsumaru turned from behind the tree he had been using as cover and took a wide swipe with his war fan, attempting to force a blast of wind into the bandits to hurt - or at least disorient and slow - them, in order to give his men a chance to regain some momentum and get a chance to converge on the bandits. Divided, it would be two even skirmishes. If they could keep the bandits in one surrounded group, it was a single battle with a tactical advantage in their favor.
"Charge, men! Keep them in the center and kill them all!" the ronin roared, quite the opposite to his normal demeanor.
[Actions: Satsumaru attacks wide with his fan to hurt and disorient the bandits as much as possible and give the volunteers a chance to charge at the bandits to keep them surrounded.]

Stats Strength: 12 (15) Dexterity: 10 (12) Constitution: 10 (21) Wisdom: 15 (16) Spirit: 8 (13)
"What a fateful battle this will be," Satsumaru muttered to himself, almost inaudibly. He intended to say it only in thought, but his mind was so preoccupied with the battle to come that it seemed his words had overflowed into speech. Normally, the black-armored ronin had a simple rule when it came to picking his battles: fight battles that you know you can win, and avoid those you can't. It wasn't what most would consider the paramount of bravery, but then, he wasn't a soldier, he was a strategist. His job wasn't to earn himself honor and prestige, it was to win battles.
That said, this Oda Nobunaga was intriguing. He was clearly no fool, yet he was dead-set on a fool's battle. Even his closest retainers had broken their silence and argued against his decision. To most, this would be cause for concern. To Satsumaru, this only guaranteed that there was a chance of victory. The pieces didn't add up, but sometimes, they didn't have to...
Seeing the Amakusa force move with Maeda Toshiie toward the supply depot and a mixed force with the Takeda men riding westward with Shibata Katsuie, the young mercenary captain gave a wry grin. He would stay with the Oda's main force. Though tempted to speak with Nobunaga himself, he put the thought aside. Now was not the time, nor was Satsumaru of proper position to even approach the daimyo so abruptly.
Instead, the long-haired ronin checked his armor and weapons, ready for what was to come.
[Action: Satsumaru staying with the main force.]

Satsumaru was surprised...he didn't expect such a deep answer.
"I suppose I didn't really think of it like that..." he admitted, raising an eyebrow, "It is interesting that, despite being separated by the rest of the world, these gaijin somehow developed similar rites and traditions in certain areas."
He wasn't xenophobic, but the word gaijin was pretty universal at this point for describing one of the foreign visitors. They were...different, to be sure, but as divisive of a subject as the Europeans were to the Japanese, Satsumaru wasn't too concerned. His sole priority at the time was warfare, and while the Europeans and their guns were changing the face of war in Japan, the red-eyed ronin didn't fall into either side of the debate.
The samurai decried the dishonor of firearms and cannons, treating the new style of warfare as an insult. The peasantry, and the use of ashigaru, were on the opposite end of the spectrum. Where the samurai lived solely for command and battle, their fighting ability was beyond challenge. Now that guns had given even the weak and untrained an equal place in battle, the peasantry were empowered. Satsumaru, a ronin and former member of a prestigious Kyushu clan, fell in the middle.
"Perhaps there's more common ground between our people and theirs than we realize," he remarked.

Frowning, Satsumaru replied, "I...think not. Though, it's flattering that you consider me a treasure."
He looked around, taking a moment to gather his thoughts. This one was a bit puzzling. But...did they really need the chest itself?
"Perhaps we don't need to take the whole chest. Let's check to see if we can open it, first. There may not even be a counterweight, but if there is, it might not be set to the exact weight of the chest," he suggested.
It was worth a look, at least. And maybe, it might allow them a chance to determine if there were any traps around it or not.
Pointing to her weapons, the red-eyed ronin remarked, "You might want to give your sai a shot. Use those to try to open the chest, just in case there's some sort of spike or something waiting to impale your hand."
That...sounded pretty grim, after he said it, but at least he was trying to avoid getting her hand impaled.

Satsumaru noticed out of his periphery (Strategist's Ring! Enhanced Perception, ftw!) the arrival of another onlooker. He didn't feel awkward until he realized that he wasn't the only one watching the procession. Instead of looking like a creeper spying on a funeral, he decided to speak up.
"Are you familiar with the Christian ways?" he asked the stranger bluntly, "I'm afraid other than some of the basics, I'm not really knowledgeable on their methods."
Satsumaru ran a hand through his long hair, taking a deep breath. These were curious people. He wasn't religious himself, but it was definitely an interesting topic.

"I see..." Satsumaru replied somberly, looking noticeably curious, "In that case, I will see to this task with haste."
And he did, though not in a disrespectful way. The grave took some time, but not too long. Satsumaru was surprisingly in shape, despite not being a stocky man. Once the grave was dug, the black-garbed ronin placed the dead body in the empty hole and covered it once more with the dirt he had moved.
"I regret that I can't place a gravestone here, but I suppose it's unavoidable. He died in an unfortunate circumstance. I will leave it to the people here to determine whether or not he deserves a stone," the ronin concluded.
He didn't mean to sound callous, but the man was killed trying to abuse a woman. Satsumaru felt it was his duty to see to the life he had taken and clean up the mess he had made, but he wasn't planning on treating the corpse like an unknown martyr. He didn't know the brute's name, nor was he planning on spending the next few days trying to figure it out.
After a moment of silence, the long-haired strategist took a breath and said, "Now, then, let me not waste anymore of your time, Amakusa-sama. What sort of offer did you wish to discuss?"

They were coming. Given the fact that it was creating dust, he could surmise that he wouldn't be lucky enough that the bandits were a mere handful of men. Regardless, whether it was ten or a hundred, there was no backing down now.
Satsumaru gripped his bow tightly and closed his eyes. He had a good head and a good deal of patience. His many senses of perception would play their part in timing the attack, but now was the time for his sense of hearing to do its job. His ears would listen to locate the enemy's progress through their ambush area.
He didn't want to hit them head-on. That would be pointless, and it would narrow their target area. The first few men would act as human shields for the incoming arrows, though probably not intentionally. The casualties from the initial surprise attack would be minimal. And the same would come of a full-on attack once they had passed. They would be at a worse position to defend themselves, but again, less initial casualties would leave a more even playing field.
No, Satsumaru wanted to wait until a good number had passed. Then, the two sides of his ambush could turn and fire, creating a wall of arrows from both sides. Even if they weren't accurate archers, shooting at such an angle and with such a spread of them would give the best chance at killing more of them from the first attack.
Once the first volley was out, the red-eyed captain could play it by ear depending on how they responded. If they panicked, another volley could work. If they began to charge, he would order his volunteers to close in on the road and flank the bandits.
[Actions: Satsumaru waits for the bandits to pass in the middle of the ambushers. Once they're all within range of the ambush, he will give the signal for them to fire.]

Satsumaru wasn't sure what to make of his success. It narrowed their potential path, but it also took care of a great deal of traps and hazards that were otherwise lying in wait. All things considered, it was well worth the loss of a little legroom. They could manage.
"Well, that worked out," he noted, taking a long look at the room's new post-remodel layout.
Following in her footsteps, the long-haired ronin sighed inwardly about what he was about to say...
"Before I suggest this, I have to reiterate that I'm not here to flirt or harass you..." he prefaced, "But I think we should stick very close to one another. If we stay close, we can help each other avoid any traps. For example...if you step on a tile that turns out to be some sort of pitfall, I can grab you before you fall. Or if I step on a trap, you can pull me away before any harm is done..."
It wasn't foolproof, of course. If a trap was set in place with no possibility of avoiding it, that's just how it would be. But at least by staying within arm's reach, they might be able to prevent any avoidable injuries...
[Actions: Following Kitana, stepping carefully and staying within arm's reach.]

With a grin, Satsumaru looked at Ryunosuke and remarked, "Sometimes it's the men 'just doing their job' who are more valuable than those who claim to be doing more."
With a shrug, he went to work on the grave, picking up where the militia commander left off. Each thrust of the shovel was strong and precise. He still took the matter seriously, even amidst a discussion. Rude or not, he couldn't ignore his obligation to dig the grave and stop for conversation. Either way, the ronin had a feeling that the daimyo and his captain wouldn't be offended. They seemed to genuinely understand.
"As for Kawanakajima...I don't think it was as grandiose as the stories make it out to be. Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin are masters of strategy, so every move they make is calculated and full of tests for their opponent. I was in two battles of their Kawanakajima excursions, and only one could really be called a battle," Satsumaru admitted, looking a little regretful, "For the most part, it was a series of probing advances. We managed to take a few fortresses, but aside from those victories we snatched from the Uesugi, Takeda Shingen wisely avoided any pitched battle to retain them. They spent months in a stalemate, but I left within the first. Knowing the reputation of both men, I deduced that it would end that way and chose not to wait around for it."
With a slight grin, he went on to note, "And to take a page from Ryunosuke's book, I was just doing my job. The Takeda contracted my assistance, I contributed to some of their successes, and I was remunerated for it. Hardly anything worth praise, I assure you."
A slight chuckle escaped his otherwise serious face.

Satsumaru felt unsure of the men's ability in combat, but the nature of this mission meant that at the very least, they were dedicated to fighting. After being preyed upon by bandits regularly, it was likely that these volunteers were the men most willing to kill those who had wronged them. The red-eyed ronin hoped this would be a factor in the fight to come.
And while not formally trained, some of these men had at least hunted before, so they had some experience with the yumi (bow). Satsumaru placed any uncertainties aside. Thirty men, desperate and devoted to killing their predators, would do the job well enough. He only had to guide them...
"All of you..." the long-haired captain spoke in a hushed voice, "Hold your bows tight to your chest, hiding behind the trees nearest the road. These trees will keep you hidden from view and provide cover in the fight to come. Keep your eyes and ears open."
Gesturing with his fan toward where he planned to station himself for the attack, he went on to say, "No one is to make any movement in the slightest until you hear my signal. If anyone steps out of line and starts taking random shots on a whim before I give the signal, I will personally take their life once the battle is over."
Some slight murmurs emanated, and more than a few faces looked grimmer, but the point was made. Anyone acting out of order would jeopardize the mission and cause unnecessary losses.
And so, with a wave of his hand, Satsumaru ordered the men to take positions throughout the treeline.

With a shrug, Satsumaru replied, "It lightened the mood in here, at least. A little less tension might make this whole situation a little easier to approach."
Not that she wasn't attractive, of course. Satsumaru was human, after all, but flirting wasn't something he did often. Or...ever, actually. In fact, he had been so focused on keeping on the move and finding his next battle that the idea of women hadn't really had much time to creep up on him. Now was no different, it seemed.
Then she mentioned pressure plates. That one seemed incredibly likely. A wide open room, treasure sitting there for the taking, no visible threats? Probably pressure plates.
"Well, just to be sure..." the long-haired man muttered, gripping his war fan and giving a focused swipe. His fan was not only the tool of a Japanese commander, but it also had the ability to throw a focused gust of wind. Satsumaru was hoping that by throwing a strong burst of air at the ground in front of them, it might either trigger any traps while they were still at a safer distance, or blow enough dust away to reveal any sort of telling markings that might help find a path if there were floor-based traps.
[Action: Satsumaru uses his fan to hit the area of the floor in front of them with a burst of wind.]

With arms crossed, an imposing figure watched over a group of Christian converts going about the burial of a lost member of their flock. His name was Yoshiyuki Satsumaru, and he watched with curiosity. The Christians had always been an interesting group, and a powerful variable in the conflicts that were beginning to erupt across Japan. Their beliefs, aside from their weapons and technology, were what made Satsumaru so interested in them.
There were some universal truths to what he had heard of them, but to him, it was as alien and strange as Shinto-Buddhism must've been to the Christians themselves.
"So...those who do not sin go to Heaven...but everyone is born with sin? And...people are expected to sin, but must be forgiven by their church to have their sins removed?" Satsumaru mused to himself, "And no matter what the case, only the dead may go to Heaven?"
With a scoff, he thought, "So...Heaven is a ghost town."
And with that, the ponderous mercenary stood by and watched as everyone went about their business.

"If you don't mind, I would like to dig the grave. I don't like the idea of another man cleaning up my mess," the long-haired mercenary requested, "If I kill a man in single combat and his body requires a burial, it is only proper that I be the one to bury him."
As strange as it was, it was clear from his expression that he was serious. He wasn't a murderer. He was determined to take responsibility for the life he had taken, and - to him - it wasn't fair for local men to dig a grave for a corpse he created. It would make him feel even worse for adding inconvenience to inconvenience.
Satsumaru reached a hand toward Ryunosuke, offering to take the shovel from him, if he were to comply with the long-haired man's request.
Turning his gaze back to Takehiro, the mercenary took a deep breath. Loaded questions, though they were simple and honest enough. "I was born in Kyushu. I came to the East because I was...looking for new opportunities," the strategist answered, "Warfare seems to be my realm of expertise. I became a ronin for hire at a young age, and the Takeda have purchased my assistance in two battles. Minor domains have also contracted me for lesser conflicts, as well. I come to Totomi from Takeda lands for the same reason a leaf finds itself away from the tree: this is simply where my path is taking me."
With a slight shake of his head, he acknowledged, "I have no particular business at hand, other than what you see in front of us."
Gesturing back at the two men, Satsumaru asked, "And who might you two be?"

StatsStrength: 12 (13) Dexterity: 10 (11) Constitution: 10 (16) Wisdom: 15 (16) Spirit: 8 (13) As they approached, the doors were ripped open and a dark force pulled the two inside. It was jarring, half due to the sheer force of being yanking inside and half from the strangeness of it all. Unseen threats, indeed...
Satsumaru was disoriented from the force, having intentionally dropped to a knee as soon as they were brought to a halt in order to stabilize himself. Once it was clear they were set, he stood back up and brushed his long hair back with a hand, taking the moment to look around.
The treasure chest at the end of the room was obviously bait. Not to say there wasn't any actual treasure in it, but for such an ominous place to pull them in and dangle a prize out in the open was a bit of a simple one. His eyes watched the room for any movement, trying to catch anything before it had to chance to make a move. As far as he could see, however, there was nothing in motion.
"I've got two of them, actually," the strategist quipped with a grin, "I'm trying to find anything about this place that sticks out, but nothing yet. If there is anything in here with us, it's pretty well hidden."
Gesturing toward the end of the room, he went on to add, "And I don't even need to tell you that the treasure is bait. We weren't pulled into a bath house, after all, we were pulled into a wing of a ruined castle. Not quite as fun, I would assume."
He wasn't great at making jokes, but sometimes even the worst joke helped prevent any tension in a crisis. Kitana seemed calm enough, but he didn't know her well enough to ignore the possibility that she might be a little shaken up.

Seeing Kitana subtly insist he go first, Satsumaru took the lead. She didn't trust him, obviously, but that was pretty realistic. She had no reason to. Most armed men in the middle of nowhere with an attractive woman probably weren't gentleman, in any sense of the word.
Wasting no time, the ronin moved off toward the left wing. Needless to say, it was just as dank and dead as the rest of the castle so far. This section seemed more open and foreboding, however. Where the entrance was empty and quiet, there was something about this section that made him feel uneasy. How many other treasure seekers had entered this place, and why had no one succeeded in taking a massive haul from it? There were no defenders, after all, that he could see.
Ah, but that was it, wasn't it? That he could see.
"We might want to tread lightly. I wouldn't be surprised if there were traps littered around the castle. It wouldn't take much to turn this castle into a coffin, if one were so inclined," the young man warned.
And though she was merely a stranger, and of no particular necessity in relation to himself, he wasn't too fond of the idea of seeing her impaled on a spike or poisoned and dying...

Crimson eyes scanned the battlefield, a slight look of displeasure on Satsumaru's face. His armored frame stood tall, his arms firmly crossed as he surveyed the situation. Ten of his men remained compared to twenty of the enemy's own number. A heavy rain of arrows had "killed" ten of his men already. To Satsumaru, this was an embarrassment. Granted, it was only a mock battle, so outside factors had no play in the engagement, but he was a man who believed in the Art of War's text.
His men were clearly losing heart, expecting to be swept from the practice field in an embarrassing defeat. Satsumaru would not accept this. He had been hired by the daimyo to test his general's tactical prowess, and he would hardly let himself be simply brushed aside.
"Commander, we're pinned down. Half of our men have been dropped, and the enemy seems dug in," his subcommander related, more to himself and to try to press a response from Satsumaru than to actually tell the man what he already knew.
"Thus, the expert in battle moves his enemy and is not moved by him," the red-eyed ronin muttered with a wry grin.
"I beg your pardon, commander, but what in the scary, decrepit hell are you talking about?" the subcommander blurted out, visibly annoyed through his panic.
Raising his war fan, Satsumaru gestured to his remaining men.
From side to side, he swept his fan, ordering, "Myself and three others will feint at the enemy, falling back and using the trees as cover as soon as they unleash the first volley. We will then continue to fall back through cover. Three men will use that display as a distraction to move on the left and hold, while you take the remaining two and move to the right. You will both hold until I signal you."
Not waiting for a response or confirmation, Satsumaru moved forward and divided the men per his orders. As soon as they were prepared, he led his unit forward in a loud display. To the unfamiliar general, this seemed like a desparate blitz from a commander with no patience or options remaining. However, a greater plan was at work. As soon as the arrows touched the sky, Satsumaru's unit hid behind trees and waited for the hail to pass. Once it did, they ran away, giving a very convincing show of fleeing.
As he suspected, the overconfident general ordered his twenty men to give chase and crush them. Once they had crossed the intial location of Satsumaru's force, the long-haired commander gave a whistle and waved his war fan. Three men on either side flanked the daimyo's general, "cutting down" the general himself, his subcommander, and five other men. With another flash of his war fan, he and his distraction force reversed direction and met the incoming attackers with their weapons. If it had been a real battle, it would've been a bloodbath.
A mere two of Satsumaru's men fell, yet the entirety of the twenty men led by his opponent were defeated. As requested, the strategist not only displayed his own prowess, but showed the daimyo where his own men were lacking. Yet, despite this victory, he regarded the loss of twelve men as a defeat. Victory should be overwhelming, not self-destructive...

Satsumaru raised his eyes from the dead man on the ground to the two men standing. One looked like somewhat of an authority figure, and given his instinct to question Satsumaru without hesitation or fear hinted that he was an authority figure. The ronin was unfamiliar with Totomi's governing figures, so it was entirely possible this man was a prefect or governor of some sort.
With slow, deliberate movements, the red-eyed warrior cleaned his blade and sheathed it to show that he meant no one else any harm. Clearly, and understandably, these people were rattled.
"I assume you are a man of Totomi. I apologize for this disturbance," Satsumaru echoed to the man, repeating his apology to the bystanders. Even in moments of conflict or tension, he was unwavering in his odd calm and polite demeanor.
Gesturing toward the unfortunate man on the ground, he wasted no time in explaining, "This man was assaulting a young woman nearby. When I caught him in the act, I demanded he unhand her. He refused and took her to the street. When he refused to comply again, I had no choice but to cut him down."
Giving an apologetic bow to Takehiro, the ronin declared, "I am Yoshiyuki Satsumaru, ronin. I may not be an entitled samurai, but I adhere to the code and laws we live by. When a peasant commits a crime against an innocent person, I am as compelled as samurai to punish him. I regret that it ended with his life, but the law dictates worse with less cause, if I were so motivated. I ask your forgiveness if I have caused your people any undue stress."
He sounded methodical and proper in speech, and surprisingly humble and direct. Though he admitted to being ronin, it was fairly obvious that Satsumaru was raised in an upstanding clan of samurai at some point prior to being ronin.

Rather abruptly a small group of villagers dispersed from amidst a crowd. Some formed a circle, masking whatever incident was in the center, while others scurried from the scene with hushed whispers. A few gasps could be heard, but for the most part, a silence gripped the crowd.
In the middle, a tall man stood firm, and emotionless gaze held on his otherwise youthful and handsome visage. Crimson streams fell from the katana still held firmly in his right hand, dripping on the soft earth below. Nearby, a young woman was bowing profusely, though the black-garbed man didn't seem to pay her any attention. His strange red eyes were fixed on the fresh corpse splayed out on the ground, a small puddle of blood growing by the second underneath it.
He wasn't fond of such displays, or the attention they brought, but this one could not be avoided...
"I apologize for the disturbance," was all the man would say, addressing no one in particular, but leaving it open to the frightened onlookers to accept as their own.
