So, let me know what you thought about the Bandit Raid here. What worked, what didn't, what could have been changed up, etc. Any and all feedback is welcomed and encouraged!
Rather than clutter the actual quest thread with this, I'll put it here; the following were turning points in the battle that could have made things go differently.
1) Takehiro and Kamaitachi led groups of bandits into the village's flank. Yukimura and Katsumi fought off a few of the bandits at the gate, but quickly turned their attention to the inside of the village, leaving the villagers at the front to fend off the bandits there. However, if Yukimura and Katsumi would have helped the villagers and wiped out all the bandits at the gates first, villager losses would have been minimal. This would have caused the villagers to outnumber the bandits: Eight bandits, two PCs, and the Chief, compared to ten villagers, three PCs, and the elder. Not to mention the inevitable support the village got, which bumped their numbers up to 16, not counting losses, PCs, or the elder.
2) Near the end of the battle, Katsumi focused on keeping Kamaitachi off the elder, rather than stopping Takehiro from slaying the villagers at the gate. The elder, however, was strong enough to take Kamaitachi out on his own, and was likely to have done so within the next two rounds, and this caused the villagers to be overrun with the bandits, quickly outnumbering them, despite their support. Had Katsumi targeted Takehiro instead, it was much less likely he'd have gone to support the bandits at the front, and more were likely to be killed, likely putting the two sides on even footing.
3) Rather than defend the elder, it would have been a good idea for the PCs to take on the bandit chief together. Mano-a-mano, he could crush any of the PCs, but a two-on-one would be too much for him, especially if he had to deal with ranged/melee at the same time. Takehiro would have been left to fight the elder on his own, with only the help of bandits who could be swatted away like flies. While his stats were the closest to the elder's at the start, it was unlikely he would be able to beat him faster than Yuki/Kat could beat the chief.
