Her gaze slid over to his face, moving back and forth from her lap to him. She was tentative but listened carefully. Her small hands curled up into tiny balls on her lap. He spoke a little of his past, how he lived, and what he lived for, and Kat knew it had to be hard. And so she said nothing, allowing him to talk.
After he finished and gave her a soft smile, a faint blush coloured her cheeks and her dark eyes fell to her lap. Her fingers tugged at her charcoal hakama. "Time... yes... I hope... that is true, Hidenori. I want... to do so... if not for me, than... for Haji-kun. T... Thank you."
She looked up at him, staring into his eyes. Her expression was soft, understanding... gracious. Katsumi then continued, "For... For sharing. I know... how hard it is. To open up... To... trust."

Her breath hitched in the middle of her throat. God, did she want to see him. Part of her was so happy to have him by her side right then. But he was injured! He shouldn't be moving! Katsumi was fretting over him, and she bit down on her bottom lip.
"Oh, Haji-kun..."
She listened to him, and tears welled in her eyes. Kat hated seeing that look within his eyes. His happiness was what was able to slip joy into her life. His smile made her want to learn how to smile, and made her feel warm inside. That vacant look and despair in his voice.... it ripped her up inside.
Her brows furrowed and Katsumi weakly shook her head, whispering, "Haji-kun, it... it wasn't your fault. There was no way... no way for you to know, and... and it was from so far back in my past... I was... I was careless and forgot. But... But it... it wasn't you, or me. It was.... It was them... Father. And... oh Haji-kun, if... if it weren't for you, I'd be dead. You did protect me. If... If you hadn't of showed up, I wouldn't be alive, we... we wouldn't be here together. You did not fail. Please... Please don't say that. You... You saved me yet again. It is I who is ashamed. I... I am so sorry, Haji-kun."
He was saying that she wouldn't understand if he lost her, and a sharp pang made her heart throb painfully. The tears threatened to fall. "Don't... Don't ever say that. Before you, I had... I had nothing. I was empty. Just... a killing doll... set on survival. I was... beyond repair, and.... and yet... you... you have been mending all of... all of those years of damage and pain."
Her voice cracked at the end and tears escaped her, slipping down her cheeks. Kat's words were struggled. Normally she didn't say much, but so much was in her heart and she had to let it all out. "All... All I've ever wanted... was to be loved... You... You finally gave me what I so desperately needed, and... and I cannot bear the thought of continuing on without you. After finally.... finally having it, I cannot possibly bear to live without you, so... so you cannot die. I need... I need you to heal and not... not die for me. I just... I can't... I can't go back to being all alone in the world. I can't. I can't do it. If... If you die, I die. I... I won't go on without you."
The young woman's bandaged hand rubbed Haji's cheek and, with a hiccup, she cried softly to him, "I... I want to become stronger too, Haji-kun. So that... we can continue... to live together."

Huh. The outfit was making her feel mighty stra-
What in the actual fuck?!
She heard barking but her keen eyes saw not dogs but.... just what were those things???? FUCKING OPIUM! It was probably killing her brain cells, and Katsumi was devastated. WHY, FATE?! WHY!?!!
Crouching down, Katsumi would jump suddenly. When she was high in the air, Katsumi gazed down and would fire at those weird mushroom dog things, and then use her wind musou to cause her to safely move over to the nearest rooftop. Wherever that was.

Katsumi's brows furrowed. Why wasn't it attacking here? Why was the giant serpent slithering away? As she began to slowly fall back down, her dark eyes followed the path of the giant snake. Her eyes were searching for the answer, and after a few moments, her stomach knotted.
"N-No...!" she whispered. Katsumi felt sick. It was heading straight for where Haji and Kat were staying. The backs of her eyes prickled. She spat out, "F-Fuck you!"
She couldn't simply fire at the snake, as it went through household to household. But Katsumi used her musou to swiftly jump from house to house, ensuring she reached Haji's before it did. Landing on the inn, Katsumi used her musou to create a powerful whirlwind, ripping off pieces of the roofs and picking up whatever was on the ground or nearby, making the items go around and around at dangerous speeds. She was creating a barrier so that the snake would be unable to get inside and hurt her lover.
"You... aren't hurting Haji-kun!" shouted Katsumi, eyes narrowed sharply.

It seemed Shou was waiting on her, something Katsumi was used to despite Japanese customs due to her upbringing with her Father. If she dared eat before he was finished, she would have certainly received a beating. With a sigh at the thought, Katsumi picked up a bowl of rice and began to consume it.
After picking up a piece of fish and consuming it, the archer inquired softly, "Since it may take a few days... I was thinking... perhaps... we send a message to the town about him. We can stay here and then... they can round him up. Or... we can simply wait until he has healed up enough for us to head to town ourselves. ... Either way is fine by me, Yamabara-san."
She nodded her head and took another sip of tea. Now that food was in her system, it seemed to remind her belly that she had not eaten in over a day, and Katsumi began to eat more quickly, quietly scarfing down her fish and rice.

Post by Shinomori Katsumi on Mar 27, 2014 15:03:20 GMT -7
Normally Katsumi wasn't one to get involved with conflict. She avoided it when possible, only really getting involved when it was a job. But after heading back to Echigo after some training ordered by Kenshin, Katsumi came across a sight that resulted in her stopping dead in her tracks and her horse to snort and stomp his hooves.
It wasn't surprising to see two factions fighting in these war-torn lands, but... it seemed to have moved into a village. Katsumi winced as she heard the screams of women and children, and bit down on her bottom lip as she saw a few get cut down. Blood trickled down her chin as it burst open.
This wasn't right. These villagers... they didn't have the skills to fight back and defend themselves. It... It wasn't fair. Maybe life wasn't fair. Katsumi knew that to be true, lived an life filled with abuse for nothing she could help. But... did that make it any more acceptable?
Katsumi felt her heart clench and, upon inhaling, her breath was shaky. The normally impassive women felt tears prickle at her eyes, and the scars on her back from the lashings ached. She empathized with these villagers. She couldn't not do something.
Dismounting her steed, Katsumi began to rush forward, using a powerful gust of wind to jump far ahead and land right in the center of the village. Motioning with her hands, Katsumi created a powerful gust of wind, knocking people away and causing them to fall onto the ground.
"Stop this needless violence! This... This village has nothing to do with your quarrel! Women and children are dying because you are battling here!" shouted the archer. She removed her bow and shot off a few spirit arrows to get her point more across. It seemed to do the trick, because those that were still standing turned to look at her. Katsumi wasn't really one to shout orders or to have her voice filled with confidence. Yet it was situations like these where sometimes she would come across as a completely different person. One who had a voice, one to listen to, one to fear and respect. Not that she really thought about it in that manner. Katsumi glanced around at all of the men, cool gaze looking them all over. "Set aside your differences enough to at least leave this place. If you so desire, fight elsewhere, or else... I will ensure none of you can fight... ever again."
One of the men stepped forward and shouted, "What the hell? You aren't even involved in this. Go away! This isn't your fight!"
"Neither is it this village's fight. Don't... Don't you see the carnage you are creating? Look around. Not... Not only are soldiers laying here, but women... children. Do you expect them to fight back? They have no weapons, no skills. They are not warriors," said the archer, waving her arm around, motioning to the village. Many of them looked around, and some seemed to be appalled, shocked.
She herself could not relate, but... this was something she often heard from soldiers, from leaders, and Katsumi went on, "Are... Are you not fighting to keep your families safe? So that this... this destruction will not reach them? Please... stop this. Fight another day, but... not now. Not here."
One of the men seemed angry and yelled, "Shut up! This doesn't involve you, kid!"
But one of the captain's placed his hand on the man's soldier before he could charge towards Katsumi. The leader shook his head. "No. Stop. What... What have we done? We... We aren't battling to cause this."
The leader from the other faction moved forward and lowered his weapon. "You... You are right. Men, it's time to retreat. We... have caused enough damage in one day. There have been far too many causalities."
After a handful of orders were made, the two leaders approached one another and bowed. They turned to Katsumi and thanked her for intervening, and both handed bags of money, telling her to give it to the village, to help compensate for the damage they caused. The archer nodded and they rode off. A heavy sigh released from her lips as they two factions left, exhausted from putting herself out there like that. But it only showed when they were gone. The villagers hesitantly moved towards her, some mourning over their losses. Katsumi handed one of the elders the money, and offered to help them rebuild.
Maybe it hadn't been her fight, but Kat finished it. Yet the damage was not done. But she would restore what she could.

"Mmm." Katsumi had been taught to hunt from a young age. While there were animals around, she could always find something to eat. But she recalled punishments from her father, forcing her to go without eating for days for displeasing him in some way or another. Katsumi sighed at the thought, closing her eyes. "I... prefer to hunt. It... feels odd when others cook for me. Makes me feel... guilty. City-life with all of its vendors and.... prepared food, it... really is peculiar to me."
The archer heard Jina's stomach growl and simply blinked, gaze moving from Jina to the fish. Little Miss Social Butterfly (lololol) pulled out a knife and quickly gut the fish, removing the innards with ease. She was obviously practiced at this, and tossed the bits in the river.
"Okay," said the young woman. Washing her hands off, the wrapped Katsumi moved over to the small fire. She thought back to her father and recalled how she used to be petrified to breathe sometimes, in fear he'd snap on her. The archer's eyes narrowed and she replied, murmuring with the last sentence more to herself than to Jina as she pierced the fish through with sticks. "... Don't worry about it. It... doesn't bother me. I'm not a bastard."

At the offer, Kat's eyes widened. After seeing such a display, how was she to go right after? It made the archer nervous, and she gulped. Yes, Katsumi was a skilled archer, but to come across another female with the same skills and who was absolutely incredible... the teenager was afraid she would pale in comparison. She was suddenly nervous about one of the few things she had confidence in.
"W... Well, I...." she trailed off, avoiding her gaze. Katsumi's small hands gripped at her bow and she swallowed roughly. As nervous as Kat was, it was be disrespectful to say no. "I... I s-suppose so..."
She bowed her head, tentatively thanking Ina. Stepping forward closer to the range, Katsumi inhaled deeply lifted up her left hand with the bow, removing five arrows. Her hand was a little shaky, but the young woman focused on her breathing to steady herself. Readying a shot, Katsumi's expression changed, growing quite serious, and she suddenly fired and fired quickly again, shooting the next target. In the heat of the moment like this, she did better, pushing aside her worries and acting almost mechanically, naturally for her.
Just focus on the targets and taking down the enemies.
Slightly turning her foot, the archer fired at a closer target and then another two further away. Removing three more arrows, Katsumi hit three targets further back in a row.
Lowering her bow, she saw that she hit mostly bulls-eyes, with two slightly off but still hitting the marks, and there was only one narrow miss. At the miss, the woman internally chastised herself. That would have earned seven lashes in the past for that one alone, forgetting the other non-perfect hits.
Despite actually doing pretty well, it was never good enough in the girl's eyes because of her upbringing, and Katsumi sighed heavily. "I think... I was nervous..."
She would murmur an apology and scratch at her head, staring intently at that single narrow miss.

Even the wary Katsumi didn't hear Noel walking up. She was too busy washing herself off and the sound of the trickling water went over the sound of footsteps further out. So of course the archer didn't realize she was being watched. At least he was kind of being a gentleman about it.
The woman wrung her hair out and heard something (the sigh), and Katsumi's eyes widened. She quickly turned in the water, glancing about, and she whispered, "W-What was that?!"
Her eyes narrowed and she searched for whatever was the cause of it. It could have just been the wind or an animal, but Katsumi was a paranoid individual, for good reason with her past. Moving over to her dagger, she picked it up and held it defensively. Her heart pounded against her chest and rang in her ears.
But at finding nothing, slowly her expression let up, although it was still a bit wary, and her hand with the dagger began to lower.
"Was it... my imagination?"

She nodded, understanding about survival. While she had lived with her father for all of those years, it was rougher than being on her own. She had to survive in the traditional sense and from him, so now it felt comparatively easier with her father dead. Inhaling deeply, Katsumi glanced down at the deer, speaking in her false tenor, "The deer... the skin needs to be removed and it needs to be butchered, but... since I am already bloody... I can do it. But... what about... cutting up some vegetables and helping prepare the stew?"
They needed water and so she pursed her lips, looking around the camp. She expected Haji to be there with water by then, and the fact that he wasn't there. Well... it concerned her, brows furrowing in the slightest. But when her eyes moved over to the single tent, she blinked. It was... a couple of buckets?
Moving over to the buckets, she saw that they were full and that there was a note. Picking up the note, Katsumi realized that Haji had come and went, stating something about helping some nearby people and that he wasn't sure how long he would be gone. Pursing her lips, the woman sighed, both in relief and also slight disappointment.
"Haji-kun... may not join us after all," remarked the woman. After tucking away the message, she brought over the buckets. "I suppose... first and foremost, the water should be heated up, if... if you could do that too, please."
The butchering would take the longest, and so she was hoping Ryu would do the rest while she worked on the meat.

After they were in the carriage, she glanced back over to Hidenori and murmured, "I... keep my name a secret for a purpose, and... neechan is so..."
She didn't really know what to say or how to feel, and the woman fell silent, a blush colouring her cheeks. A sigh escaped her lips and she closed her eyes.
"I'm just... not used... to people being so familiar... and nice," said she, and then Kat looked up at Haji's older brother. While she was happy with Haji and had friends, it was clear within her eyes that she had lived a rough life and that she was broken, and would take time to piece together. There was happiness there, but it was overwhelmed with disheartening experiences. "Your brother was the first person who... who was ever kind to me. We met.... a.... few months ago. Since then... I've met others, but... well... it's... really nice, but... I don't... really know how to deal with it sometimes. I'm not... used to really... being around people, unless... it is to kill or train. And now... that's changing, and it's kind of.... baffling. I don't know what to do half the time, if at all."

Most of the enemies were being taken care of, and Katsumi turned her attention to the armory. There was a possibility that the enemy would try to destroy their own weapons so that they couldn't use them, and that just wouldn't do. Any enemies around that area would be shot at, Katsumi careful not to shoot her own comrades (her wind musou could held prevent that and her visor), and she would use gusts of wind to lift some men up in the air and fling them far away.

Neither were letting up, the situation only getting worse. This was quickly turning bad and it was going to result in bloodshed and death, and Katsumi couldn't let that happen. This was Haji's brother, and she would be damned if she couldn't take Hideyasu to him. Also, this rifle-guy was a dick and threatened her yeah, fuck you, Oda scum! xD
Narrowing her eyes sharply, Katsumi grit her teeth and stepped forward, creating a powerful whirlwind. At the very least it would take their weapons (or them along with it if they wouldn't let go) and slam them on either side of the bridge.
"Stop it! Both of you!" shouted the woman, anger clearly resonating in her voice. It sounded less masculine at that point, but she didn't care. "I will not let either one of you die right now. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!!!"
And with that, her eyes widened and the gusts of wind blew harder on them, forcing them in their place as they were pushed harder against the side of the bridge. There was no way they would be able to fight against the power of her musou right then, and it was clear within her dark eyes that there was no way in hell Katsumi would let up until they gave her the answer she wanted to hear and fucking meant it.

Her tiny frame was hanging from the tall man, and at hearing his name for her, the woman's eyes widened sharply and, at wincing and blushing deeply from the overly familiar name, she dropped to the ground.
Brows furrowing, she peered up at him and murmured lowly, obviously nervous and uncomfortable, "Hidenori..."
She sighed heavily, unable to really do anything about it. So she would just climb into the carriage behind him and sat across from the tall man, glancing away from him and looking out of the window.

She blinked and looked over at Shou. Kat was so used to doing it all on her own that she was thrown off a little. But she then bowed her head to show her appreciation. "Alright, Yamabara-san. Thank you."
"Do not worry yourself, Yamabara-san."
Food came in with hot water, and the innkeeper quickly left after making sure they were settled. The archer proceeded to make tea, and Katsumi poured them some, handing Shou a cup. She made a separate batch for the bandit, and upon finishing the woman shifted over to the thug, who rested against the wall all tied up. Katsumi lifted the cup to the man's lips so she could drink, but she would proceed to spit at her, glaring angrily at the archer.
Katsumi stopped and released a sigh, the lids of her eyes drooping. She wiped off her face with the sleeve her her black kimono, expression entirely impassive. In fact, the archer was unnervingly calm. Setting the tea down to the side, it didn't seem like she'd do anything, but suddenly with a swift movement, she backhanded the man with enough force to cause him to fall onto the ground. Moving the tea over to his face, she said coolly, eyes narrowed, tone of voice frighteningly calm and cold, "It's medicinal. Don't try that again. If you think... I have any qualms against killing you... you are mistaken, idiot. Do not take my actions as kindness."
No, she wasn't like Haji. She never could be purely good like him. Katsumi was not so forgiving or benevolent, and her gravely serious expression frightened the man, whose cheek ached from the force of the impact. Avoiding her dark gaze, the thug sipped at the tea on the ground, and after a few moments, Kat shifted back over to Shou and her tea. Closing her eyes, Katsumi finally took a sip in silence.
Actions spoke enough for her.

After gaining more power, Katsumi felt a strong urge to go back to Numa and kick the castle's ass, figuratively and kind of literally speaking. When she was there, Katsumi had been an embarrassment and it had deeply hurt her pride. But the woman was going to change that. She was going to show this fucking place who was boss!
Dragging Haji pretty much the whole way, small hand gripping his arm, Katsumi headed towards Numa, eyes narrowed sharply. She had left her steed further back, not wanting to leave it in this area.
"Time for payback, fucker!" she hissed under her breath. At this point, she had tunnel vision and all she could see was Numa castle ahead of her. The screams of pain and eeriness went entirely unheard, as she glared at the castle with murder in her eyes (lol). She had a goal, and Kat would be damned if she was stopped before she achieved it.

Katsumi rode in with Haji on his chariot. The men on the opposing side were drunk and unprepared, and the serious woman muttered, "Fools..."
As they charged their enemies, the archer inhaled deeply and aimed gusts of wind at some of the enemies, creating sickles to slice and dice at them. She would then fire repeatedly at any enemy she could get a clear shot of, hoping to take out as many as possible. Not for Lord Oda, but for the money. Not that she would say that right to the guy's face.

The second trial wiped out Katsumi, the emotional trial especially heavy for her. And so the woman sat on the ground and rested as the others proceeded through the third trial. She watched carefully for a while, observing what the others did. Her dark eyes switched from the men, Kanetsugu, and the totems floating in the air. After some time, a plan formulated in her head and the woman closed her eyes, resting and meditating until everyone finished.
The archer was the last to go, opting to be, and opened her eyes when it was her turn. Inhaling deeply, Katsumi picked herself up and walked forward. She stared silently at Kanetsugu before glancing up at the totems. Removing the bow from her back, she pulled back the string and fire repeatedly with great haste at all of the totems. There seemed to be little effect and they remained in the air.
"Hmm..." Putting the demon bow on her back, Katsumi lifted her hand up. Her expression was unreadable. "Please... wait a moment, Kanetsugu-san."
The woman made her way towards the edge of the treeline, where snow covered boulders and trees stood. She blinked as she gazed at them, stopping when about halfway from the trial and the trees. Katsumi turned towards the group of people.
"I suggest... moving back... a lot," called out the woman, voice steady, calm.
Katsumi closed her eyes in order to concentrate, focusing on her breathing. The wind began to pick up, and she stood still, hands clasped together. She could practically feel her spirit pulsing and the wind grew stronger. A large, powerful whirlwind formed behind the woman, brown locks tied back in a ponytail whipping about her face. The trees groaned and several were ripped from their roots, swirling around and around. Even a couple of the boulders lifted up in the air, and they all gained momentum.
Sweat beaded down her brow, slipping across her cool flesh, as she made it stronger, causing the objects to fly around faster. Katsumi clenched her teeth, furrowing her brows, and eventually the woman snapped open her eyes, releasing a cry. As she shot her hands forward, palms open, the whirlwind catapulted the trees and boulder... right towards the totems.
Unlike the spirit arrows, these seemed to do the trick.
They were knocked clean out of the air and likely demolished the poor things, and as soon as they were taken down, the whirlwind died down and Katsumi bent over, hands on her knees as she panted. The previous trial had taken so much out of her that this task was a lot more difficult than it normally would have been. And so she also wanted to ensure there was enough power to where it would actually be effective and do what she wanted.
After catching her breath, Katsumi stood up tall and walked forward, going back to the men, and moved with ease where the others had not. Upon crossing the line with no difficulties, she turned towards the gaping Kanetsugu and pursed her lips.
"... It still counts, right?" she inquired softly, glancing over at Lord Kenshin and back to the man with uncertainty. Technically, all he said was to cross the line and she did lol...

With the first pic, the assignment was to find a pic from a magazine and basically draw it. I remember flipping through the magazine, saw the clock eyepatch, and was like, "That's pretty friggin' cool," so I picked it.
I'm mostly drawing on paper because that's the material I have, it was required for class, and I want to learn how to draw on it before moving to a pad, or something. Haha! But thank you very much. It was a very emotional scene for me in the manga, and I am in love with Toboso-sensei's work. While I'm still trying to find my style, I want mine to be primarily inspired by hers. I doubt I could ever draw her style, because it is soooo amazing. She's a goddess! <3 ;3;
And honestly your art is really good, Maki. I have to use references and am very poor with proportions, and all sorts of things. And I cannot draw guys for shit. It's sad, really. I haven't ever drawn a single full-grown man who looked even somewhat decent. xDDD

... Why not? Lol So back in high school, I finally had the opportunity to take my first real drawing class my senior year. We were asked to do a realistic sketch, and this was my first one on my own. Took about 2-3 days to complete. It was time consuming and I see a lot of flaws now, but... considering it was my first drawing class ever, I'm pretty proud of it. There's also a pic I did around the same time of one of my original characters in a fanfic, Emilie Wright. To explain, I was dabbling in different art styles, trying to find my own style (suffice to say, that has yet to happen), and decided to experiment with old school shojo. You know, huge eyes, weird tiny bodies, etc. I don't particularly like it, but... eh. The hair was fun, and I enjoy that at least. xD Oh, and then for an assignment in the class, I decided to draw that same OC and sketch out a RP ship. (EmiliexCharles, from the manga Blood+... err... "aged" up. xD) Look how cutsey it is? Daaaw. I used a kiss picture for reference and yeah. Bam. I like it. The pic isn't particularly spectacular but it's adorable. Haha Towards the end of the semester, we were required to find a picture, sketch it out, and then use pastels (picking colours that matched the emotions displayed in the pic.) So I picked a panel from my favorite manga series, Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler. Suffice to say, I fucking HAAAAATE pastels, and will never work with them again if I can help it. It was awful. Ugh. My arms and nails were filthy, and it was worse because I'm a lefty. >.< But... at least it turned out okay, I guess. xD (Funny little info bit here. Just noticed that when I made the width 500, the height became 666. Heh.) I get a lot of muse from music, and when I was at a Dave Matthew's concert, I began to sketch a character of mine. It's very bleh. I'm much better with references, and not nearly close enough at the skill-level where I can just draw stuff from my head, back then and especially now (I haven't practiced at all in about a year and a half, or so. Shame on me!) Plus... I made it at a concert on a hill. xD I have some other stuff, but I don't really feel like posting them up. It's mostly me trying to find my style, and failing miserably. -le sigh- I really do hope to start drawing again. I need to stop criticizing everything I do and just do it, so I can get better. xDDD

Despite having been asleep so long and simply laying there in bed, Katsumi felt weary. Her bones ached, her hands ached, her everything ached. Even her spirit and heart.
Katsumi felt so guilty about her father's past catching up to her, and for not only endangering herself but Haji. She hadn't recalled or even realized the significance of the town until it was far too late, and was too blind and weak to stop the men. Katsumi had gotten herself captured and tortured, and she quite frankly could have lived with that. What little pride she had would have been damaged, but what tore her up inside was that her Haji had been thrown in the middle of it all when he had nothing to do with it. Of course, she was still angry at her father and blamed him, but much of those emotions were dealt with that night, and why her hands were in such bad shape.
After the old woman left, Katsumi closed her eyes and sighed, and that sigh was painful. She winced and found herself internally sighing in response. Broken ribs sucked and, with all of the injuries, she knew it would take a while to heal. There was a fear and dread in that, but she had to remind herself that Father wasn't around anymore. Katsumi was allowed to lay down and heal. Right?
It was difficult convincing herself that.
Eyelids fluttered closed and Katsumi decided to try and sleep again. If she tried to stay up, it was inevitable that the woman would attempt to keep herself busy. Her breathing was shallow and she focused on nothing in particular, purposefully keeping her mind blank. If she allowed herself to think, Kat wouldn't be able to rest, and... well... that's what she needed most right now.
The focus on nothingness made it so that she didn't hear Haji enter. It was not until she heard her name and realized it was, in fact, Haji's voice, her eyes snapped open and Katsumi looked over at the source. It was Haji! Crawling over to her!
"H-Haji-kun?!" exclaimed the woman. The cry hurt her to do and, again, Katsumi winced. He continued to move towards her, and the little bit of colour in her cheeks drained and she paled. He had no business being here! He needed to heal! Her brows furrowed deeply and Kat clenched her teeth. "D-Damn it, H-Haji-kun! You... Y-You need to heal. Rest! W... What are you d-doing?! I'll be f-fine! I... I t-told her to t-tell you that!"
Tears welled in her eyes and slipped down her patched up and bruised cheeks. Of course she wanted to see Haji, and the selfish part of her was happy to see him. But she was practical and seeing him in this state, desperate to reach her, caused her to worry. That concern overrode everything else. She wanted him to be okay. She needed him to be.
He reached her, crying and telling her repeatedly that he was sorry. Sorry for what? Haji didn't do anything wrong. It was Katsumi. Father. Those men. Not Haji.
"Haji..." breathed the girl, bottom lip trembling. A heavily bandaged hand moved weakly over to Haji's and rested on top of his. She felt incredibly guilty and was overwhelmed with emotions, and with her background she didn't really know what to do. And for that she felt even worse. Despite how weak she was, Katsumi moved her other bandaged hand to his head, sliding onto his cheek. "S... Stop it. You... don't... don't have any r-reason to be sorry. It's not... your f-fault. None of it is. It... It was my past. F... Father's... Not yours. It wasn't you. You... You were thrown in the m-middle. So... So please... d... don't..."

{Eric gave me permission to use Kenshin in this post, just fyi. ^_^}
Katsumi wasn't a leader, or at least she certainly didn't see herself as one. In fact, she wasn't supposed to be one now, just one of the archers on the practice mission Lord Kenshin assigned, but things has a way of turning around and going unexpectedly sometimes.
"Captain, what do we do?!" exclaimed one of the men.
The medium-sized man who was assigned as leader was bug-eyed, staring down at the map laid out on the table in the center of the room. His dark eyes frantically searched the paper, fingers clutching at the hair at his temples. Sweat covered his forehead and at each thump of the enemy fire on the shack he flinched. Jiro was about ready to have a panic attack from the pressure, that much was clear.
He stayed silent, and the other men began to shout about what to do, nearly everyone but Kat was panicking. Katsumi was at the window, occasionally shooting spirit arrows at the enemy just to do something and because she was assigned to do so. There was little point, but she followed orders. Jiro told her and the other archers to fire earlier. So that was what she was supposed to do, right?
"Come on, man! What do we do?"
"Yeah!"
"Come up with something, Captain! Please!"
"We're gonna lose this, aren't weee?!" began to cry one.
Most of these guys were older than her, and yet they held not the maturity and experience Katsumi had. She practically rolled her eyes at their shouts. That wasn't going to get them anywhere. But Katsumi remained silent. This wasn't her mission to lead, and she wasn't a leader. It was Jiro's job. Hers was to follow.
Finally Jiro cracked. "SHUT UP! I... I CAN'T... I CAN'T DO THIS! STOP IT! I DON'T WANT TO! I CAN'T!"
She furrowed her brows at hearing the captain panic and stomp away, and the archer moved her gaze over to him. He threw his hands in the air and gave up, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks. Jiro went over to a corner of the shack and slid down the wall, becoming an absolute mess, rocking himself to and fro.
The woman released a heavy sigh and her and the other archers lowered their bows and stopped firing. Rubbing her face, the petite woman masquerading as a man moved over to the table while the others wandered off, debating on what to do. She poured herself a cup of water and sipped at it, indifferently glancing down at the map. The woman didn't particularly care how this mission went. She was simply helping out Lord Kenshin.
Looking over at Jiro, she doubted it would be long before they would surrender. Maybe then she could actually get back to other training. But... it was rather a shame to lose after all of this work and "losing" so many men. Yet they were backed into a corner. What else could they do?
The lids of Kat's eyes drooped as she dropped her gaze back to the map. She curiously looked it over and, after a couple of minutes, she blinked a few times and stiffened. Was... that right?
"Guess it's time to give up then..." murmured one of the men finally. All of their shoulders were slumped.
The female archer's eyes narrowed, finger moving across the map, going back and forth between two points. "... Wait."
They all looked over at her in surprise. In the whole mission, she hadn't spoken a single word and simply obediently followed orders. That was all she did. But now she was speaking, and they weren't entirely sure how to react, looking amongst themselves. Katsumi found a mine, one end about six miles south of their current location. The other end was at the “enemy” camp. And she had a light-bulb (candle flicker? Lol) moment.
“Mine... there is a mine six miles off... and the other end near the back of their camp,” remarked the archer.
The men gathered around the table, peering down at the map. Her finger showed them what she found, sliding back and forth, and some of them began to nod.
“That's right. Didn't they used to mine the metal there and make the swords in the camp until it ran dry?” asked one of the men.
One of them nodded in response. “Yeah. It was real convenient because of how close it was.”
"But... it's covered with rocks, isn't it? Blocked off?" interjected someone else.
Katsumi shook her head and, with slight hesitation because of her constant wariness, she admitted, "Wind... I can use... my musou.” She nodded. "Trust me."
Most of them had seen her use the musou during the Uesugi training, and quickly silenced those that opposed, backing up her claim. As the others gathered hope again and grew excitable, Jiro still sat on the floor and hearing what was going on only caused him to panic more. He began to shout about like he did earlier. That they were fools. That they just needed to give up. He failed, which meant they failed. This irked Kat, and swiftly she made her way to him, lifting him up from the scruff of his neck with surprising strength for her size. And then a loud sound filled the air, the back of her hand slapping him across the face.
“Calm the hell down. Focus on your breathing and not being an idiot. Okay?” said the woman sternly. He had been hysterical, and that would only result in trouble, whether towards himself or for the whole of the group. Either one was unacceptable. This surprised everyone, but no one more so than Jiro. While he stopped shouting, Jiro was certainly shaken up, staring wide-eyed at Kat, trembling violently.
Seriously. What the hell was with this guy? Had he never been engaged in conflict before? Lord Kenshin certainly wouldn't have put someone so green in this position, right? Regardless, Jiro was too unstable to move forward right then. He would only slow the team down and screw shit up, and further damage himself. Katsumi knew enough about paranoia and panic to realize he needed to rest and take a break.
“Jiro-san should stay behind if... the group wants to... to move forward,” claimed Katsumi. The men glanced about and discussed the matter. Did they want to keep moving forward? There was fire within their eyes, and it was quickly determined they did. The archer's lips pressed together in a straight line, and she replied, “Alright, but if we do ... they need to believe we're here.”
One of the men offered to stay behind with Jiro and shoot occasionally. Kat and men nodded, packed up their things, and proceeded to head out towards the mine. The trekked for about an hour through the woods, eventually reaching a clearing. Upon reaching the mine, she turned towards the group and informed them to step back and hold onto the trees. For those that saw her musou, they did so very quickly and motioned for the others to do the same and to hurry their asses.
Katsumi faced the mine and closed her eyes, inhaling deeply. Clasping her hands together, the woman focused on her breathing, calming her mind and body, and the wind began to pick up. It swirled around and turned into a large whirlwind, growing in power until it was able to lift up the rocks and boulders blocking the mine. The spun round and round, until the flew off far into the forest, and then the whirlwind died down. Releasing her breath, the archer wiped her brow and opened her dark eyes.
There was a sudden applaud and Katsumi blinked and turned around, confusion clearly written across her features. They laughed at this, and the woman felt as though she were out of the loop, her sense of humour not quite developed as of yet. Since the mine would be pitch black, Katsumi suggested creating torched and so her and the men did. They stood at the entrance of the mine, readying to venture in.
“What about a strategy once we get there?” inquired one of the men. They all nodded.
“Well... when we reach the end, I will use my musou to take care of the blocked passage,” said the woman. They all looked at Katsumi expectantly, waiting for her to continue and she blinked, glancing at them all. It seemed they saw her as the new leader now and since nobody else was contributing or seemed to desire the role, Katsumi sighed heavily. She detested being the center of attention but... one had to do what one had to do, right?
“From there... well... we should be facing the camp, according to the map. They won't see the attack coming and will get them from behind. So... I will use my musou to bombard the enemy with the rocks at the other end, and... those with bows will stick back and shoot, and... when we gain ground, swordsmen move forward. I will protect them with the wind, and the archers will defend them as well. We will use our force and power defensively and offensively until... until the enemy eventually surrenders. If they don't... well... we can... force them,” she ended with a nod, closing her mouth. It was weird to talk so much in front of so many people and give orders.
And that was precisely what they did. It took some time to make it through the mine, Katsumi guiding the eight other men through the tunnels with the map. When they reached the blocked off end, the plan went into action, and it worked beautifully. No one suspected a thing, and when powerful gusts of winds caused the rocks to shoot out and boulders began to fly into the camp, there were shouts of terror and surprise. Katsumi used the boulders and rocks to destroy some of the buildings and weapons, and the enemy side was bombarded by her attacks and the arrows of the archers, and they quickly gained ground, moving forward. And soon enough the swordsman clashed swords. men shot arrows and clashed swords.
Men were getting injured or kneeling down to admit defeat to avoid serious injury. Katsumi was getting weary from using her musou for such an extended time, but they were almost done. All she needed was to get them to surrender. It wouldn't be long now... Enemies were knocked onto the ground and defeated on after the other. Katsumi was near the lead uncharacteristically, blocking attacks with gusts of wind and making it difficult for the other side to attack and move forward. Upon catching sight of the leader, marked by a ribbon of red, the archer rushed forward, removing her whip sword and knocking the men out with some of her swordsmen. She kept shouting about surrendering, but the leader seemed determined to win, which was foolish. Nearly all of his men were down for the count by now. Due to her speed and strength, and their support, before long the woman stood before the leader, bow and spirit arrow now in hand, aimed right for him.
“Surrender now?” said the woman, tilting her head and quirking her brows. He visibly gulped and put his hands up, finally surrending with chagrin. At the news, Kat's side cheered, all of them having made it, and Katsumi felt.... good. They won. And.... she had actually led them. It was an unusual but pleasant feeling. One of satisfaction and pride, both of which were unfamiliar to her. The men surrounded Katsumi and lifted her up, and the petite archer yelped, flailing her arms and feeling uneasy, “P-Put me d-down! … P-Please!”
They laughed and lowered her back to the ground, proceeding to playfully punch and push her. Slowly they drifted off, celebrating amongst themselves, and Katsumi rubbed her slender form, nibbling on her bottom lip.
“Ow,” she moaned under her breath.
Her nose was wrinkled as she rubbed the bruises she knew were to come. At hearing even more commotion from the men and some of the conscious losing side people, Katsumi saw Lord Kenshin with others entering the camp. He was quickly greeted by people of both sides, verbally bombarded by accounts of what happened and how great he was just as Kat's enemies were previously.
Katsumi stuck back, simply bowing in respect and staying silent. Others talked about her and what happened with Jiro, the whole thing, with enough vivacity and fervor that it would be a wonder indeed if he didn't instantly have a headache. He nodded as they spoke and glanced over at Katsumi. She looked up in time and their gaze held longer than it should have, causing the woman to furrow her brows and tilt her head. The wheels in her head began to turn and her eyes narrowed slightly.
No... No way. It... couldn't be...
'Was this your intention, Kenshin-sama?' inquired her chocolate hues.
Had he intended for her to take the lead the whole time? She had noticed how he seemed impressed with her at the trials but... that didn't mean she was special or anything, right? She was just a merc. Someone even less important than one of the foot soldiers. Although, it had seemed odd that someone like Jiro had been put in charge, but everyone had to be trained at some point, right?
