Appearance: Juubei is a man of average height and average build. He has white hair and a vertical scar running down the left side of his face, across his left eye. Juubei also stands out due to his heterochromatic eyes, a genetic anomaly in which a person is born with two eyes of differing colors. In Juubei’s case, his right eye is a dark blue, almost black color, and his left eye is a reddish-brown.
Personality: Kurosawa Juubei is an upbeat man who always tries to see the good in people and give them the benefit of the doubt. Always helpful, even to complete strangers, he is a well liked man in his community. This, however, isn’t the whole story. Within Juubei’s mind is a “switch” of sorts that enables him to adopt a distinctly different personality in the blink of an eye. This alternate personality is a true professional, a man who lives in the realm of morally grey, and won’t hesitate to do anything asked of him. It was these traits that allowed Juubei to take up a position as a man who tortures other people for information. The extent of this personality is so great that he won’t flinch even when he’s ordered to perform his job upon women and children.
History: Juubei is a rather unique man in his profession as a mercenary in that he has very little training in the arts of war. He grew up in a wealthy family with strong ties to the government and was given everything he could have ever wanted. It was early on in his childhood that his parents discovered an alarming personality trait about Juubei. You see, Juubei, has a quirk about him that enables him to perform certain tasks that others would find repugnant in nature. It’s an internal switch that Juubei can turn on and off, as he pleases, essentially allowing him to be two different people. This peculiar development eventually led Juubei to specialize in a very specific area of warfare, one where it didn’t matter how physically capable he was. This field was torture. It became Juubei’s job to extract information from captured enemies and than dispose of them once they’d told him everything they knew. It wasn’t the kind of job most people would want to do and I suppose that’s why Juubei excelled at it. He wasn’t like everyone else and could do the job with incredible ease.
This frightened some people, worried others, but occasionally made him a well liked person amongst his superiors. He was someone who could be counted on to do any job, no matter how morally questionable it might be. Juubei can do this because he considers himself to be a true professional and doesn’t let his work define who he is. Despite the often violent nature of his profession, Juubei is a cheerful, kind, and compassionate person to everyone he meets. He is able to act this way because of that mental switch mentioned previously. The second he is done performing his duties, Juubei can instantly revert back to the friendly person he’s known to be. Whether or not this is a mental disorder or just a unique skill he possesses in anyone’s guess.
Juubei is talented at what he does, but in his mid twenties he began to realize just how inefficient he was at fighting. Sure he could torture a person with the best of them, but in an actual fight he was pretty worthless. So Juubei decided to become a mercenary to learn how to become a better killer and earn some money in the process.
Weapon Preference: Juubei doesn’t really consider himself the samurai type and really has no interest in the utilization of swords, axes, daggers, or even bow & arrow. Instead he opted to learn the methods of carrying, shooting, and reloading a Tanegashima, or Japanse matchlock rifle. It’s an inaccurate weapon that takes much longer to reload and fire than your traditional bow & arrow. An archer being able to get off about fifteen arrows in the time it takes a skilled man to reload and fire his weapon. To counteract this flaw, Juubei spent a great deal of time learning how to use the rifle as a club.
