The smoke tactic worked! The bandits started coughing and were distracted while Hake led his charge.

The moment the smoke started thickening and was blown towards the gate guards, blinding their vision and making them unable to breathe properly, Hake ordered his archers forward. "Take out the enemy archers on top of the gate first. Soldiers, volunteers, remain in front of the archers and protect them from anyone coming at them." Hake himself remained between the archers and the front row, moving along with them as the arrows started flying over his head towards the distracted guards.

As there would probably be more enemies coming towards them the moment the smoke was noticed, Hake made sure his men knew to prepare for them. "Eyes towards the top of the wall. Shoot anyone who comes in sight. Don't die." On the right of them, where the hay bales were burning, it looked like the wind was whipping up the fire even more. If they were lucky, the wooden wall surrounding the mill would catch fire as well, blocking off the enemies coming over the wall from their right.

If they reached the wall without casualties, Hake would order the men to bring it down as quick as possible, leaving the soldiers, each with a few volunteers and the bowmen to protect the workers and fight off anyone coming on the wall to stop them. With his little force at his command, Hake was sure that a lot of them would die before this was over. The enemy had been able to put 3 archer guards on each gate of the mill's wall. Who knew how many of them would remain inside still. Perhaps the smoke would get some of those inside as well, making their breach easier.

The arrows reigned down hell on the bandits. A few of them recovered in time to strike back, shooting out arrows that killed 2 villagers.

Hake's villager volunteers brought axes down on the wooden gate that protected the bandits inside while the bowmen covered the wall above them. Two of his men lay dead on the ground while the soldiers did their best to rally the few men they had. Hake sighed. If only the hunters had responded to the call... and the lumberjacks... and the villagers in general. But it seemed they rather submitted and died then lift a single finger to... Hake pushed away the thought as his anger was starting to cloud his thinking. "Don't open the gate, just weaken it and wait. Archers focus fire on the gate. When it opens, fire at will." Once his archers were ready, aiming for the gate, Hake ordered the gate opened.

"Push the gates open, just a moment. Fire through it. Make sure you can pull the gates close again. We don't want to get riddled with arrows." Hake had two people on the gate, to open and close it, two soldiers, on one each side of the gate, their shields up to protect the gate people and then four archers, ready to fire everything they had the moment the gate opened.

As the gates opened, the bandits would rush them, forcing the gates to open wider and completely, thrusting the soldiers out of the way. The arrows would riddle the bandits as they came through. It appeared Hake and his crew were going to be in for a close ranged fight.

With the enemy crashing into them, Hake had no choice but to jump into battle himself. While he didn't really do any jumping, Hake did step forward and thrust his hand forward. The sword hidden within his sleeve shot out towards the incoming bandits, the ones that managed to get through the initial arrow fire. His blade danced in the air in front of him as the young man slashed at the bandits, keeping them at bay and, if lucky enough, killing a few of them. As he fought them off the two melee teams on both sides, which had been at the gates the moment the enemy broke out started to flank the bandits.

As Hake parried and blocked bandit attacks, his archers, given a moment due to their leader's valiant defense drew more arrows and started firing into the bandits from almost point blank range. As the soldiers and the remaining volunteers pushed towards him, Hake's troops formed a solid line just outside the gate, forcing the enemy through the literal choke point there. The smoke of the fire was making both seeing and breathing difficult for both sides as the wind pushed it towards the inside of the compound.

Hake's attacks were a great success! Him and his team fought back the bandits taking out about half of them. Furthermore it seems his actions finally drew out the bandit leader.

"YOU FOOLS GOING TO LET ONE BLOODY WENCH AND HER RAGTAG TEAM OF VILLAGERS PUSH YOU BACK?!"

The bandit leader, drew a double sided axe and slammed it into one of the villagers from the melee team's skull. He then quickly spun around with the flat side of his axe, slamming it into the two soldiers and the other villagers, pushing them all back with a gust of wind.
