Haruyuki had features that would make some people treat him as a female: a beautiful face, long and smooth hair that was sometimes not tied, and a very fair and glassy complexion. But the manner he played his unfortunate situation was surprising: when he was not wearing his customary black kimono and hakama; or his get-up as a spy; he definitely would pass off as a woman as he disguises as one.
Personality:
As explained above, he would always be passed off as a woman, and so Haruyuki had to temper his personality as a male when he was deliberately a male, but he loosens it when he was deliberately disguised as a female. That said, he had a very playful attitude as he always plays around with situations that could be thought of as serious. As a male companion he could be very rowdy at times; as a female his courtesy was too much it could irritate other people.
History:
It all started in a village in Oshu, where Haruyuki was born of parents whose trade was to infiltrate houses as people doing odd jobs to spy on their owners. As a very beautiful male who really passes off as a woman, the children who studied with him in a village school always teased him as an effeminate man, and so Haruyuki decided that he would be firmer in affirming that he was a male. He was always into fights, and gradually he had always dodged everything that could be thrown to him, but the teasing did not stop, and so Haruyuki just decided to play it along, and disguised himself as a female at some times. The males who were teasing him were gradually enticed with his "beauty" that they were led into a trap, and after some time Haruyuki had turned the tables on them; he was then the one who does the teasing. Seeing his skill in the art of disguise, his parents decided to employ him in the service of the Date. But it was said that the Date merits skill in the fighting arts, and so Haruyuki was trained in that aspect by his parents. It was said that when he was finally presented to the Date, his graceful sword-dance had made the person who was tasked to examine him kept on staring at him for five minutes, presumably due to his inborn beauty, until he finally gave his approval. By then he was tasked to become a spy for the Date, his beauty as deadly as his swords.
