His shoulders hurt, and he was punched away again, but overall, Kenji could've come out much worse from that exchange. He'd even gotten the armor off partway from his foe. That glow, though... Whatever was about to happen couldn't be good. Clearing his mind and breathing out, Kenji concentrated on his next move. He sheathed both his swords, settled into a low stance, and rested his hand on Yawarakai-Te's hilt, sighting in his target.
With no further warning, he darted forth at the knight and unleashed a practiced battojutsu cut.

Great success! Kenji was winning once again, and he had the opportunity to end it right here and now, if he didn't squander his time. Quickly, he retrieved his Yawarakai-Te and masterwork katana, both luckily near his feet, and settled his stance before stepping toward the knight, intent on relieving it of its breastplate before it could recover from paralysis.

Now Kenji was flying through the air, and prone to serious pain if he hit a wall. Thankfully, he had not been hit this time, merely thrown, so his ability to stop himself wasn't hindered. Catching himself in the air, he transferred his flight momentum into a downward dive, rolling and coming to his feet just in time to barely avoid smacking into the wall.
"Whoa...! Too close."
With that, Kenji turned to sight in and face off with the knight. Now he truly was disarmed, though his body was a valid weapon. The good news was that the knight also lacked proper weaponry, and was pained by his missing gauntlets. Putting up his arms to shield his head and ribs, Kenji advanced on the knight and looked for an opening to rush in and uppercut his helmet. If, perchance, the knight acquired a weapon and tried to attack, he'd shift to evasion, ducking and weaving whilst still seeking that same opening.

Kenji had been resting for the night at this village within Totomi, bound for home. At the time of the attack, he'd been out taking a walk, enjoying the moonlight. It was peaceful and serene, a lovely evening for some fresh air. Then he heard the screams. Cries of the townspeople and wild battle cries from bandits filled the air around him. The village was under attack!
The shugyosha had no intention of letting this stand. It was a risk, fighting so many brigands without backup (for he wasn't entirely aware of the local daimyo's presence just yet), but for those who could not defend themselves, he would fight as hard and long as he needed to. Tearing his swords from their sheathes at his waist, Kenji steeled himself and rushed the nearest group of bandits, flourishing his iron and steel in a swift dance of precision cuts. If successful with his initial attack, he'd settle into a balanced stance and begin picking off the thugs two by two; if not so successful, he would back off in a defensive stance and counter those who came at him until the group was dispatched.

This was Kenji's chance! Without the slightest hesitation, Kenji dropped his sword sheathes and snatched up the knight's fallen nodachi. Taking the sword into two hands, he swung high diagonally, intending to sunder his enemy's breastplate and helm in one slash.

This was not exactly going as Kenji would've hoped, though that fact would not hinder him. Relying on his instincts and adrenaline, he rolled out of the way again and, bracing his makeshift weapons over his head, kicked to his feet. He intended to use the momentum of his rise to slam both sheathes down on the nearest piece of the knight's armor as he could. If successful, he'd follow through by attempting once more to disarm the knight of his most righteous nodachi.

Kenji theorized that if the knight's hand were real, and not a collective of energy, he might have a thick red mark on his face. He had to admit, that was a good hit. No time to admire the enemy's might, however, as he quickly recovered and diverolled out of the nodachi's path, quickly rising to his feet near the knight and resuming his beating.

Kenji once again literally rolled with his momentum, backrolling to his feet with his scabbards in his hands. The moment he was standing again, he kicked off and lunged at the unarmed knight, putting great strength into a flurry of swings specifically targetting the knight's armor joints and helmet. He intended to strip the being bare and render it defenseless.

Oh dear. Disarmed. If Kenji weren't properly trained, this would be the death knell for him.
Maybe it is anyway, but we'll find out soon enough.
Remaining collected and unwavering, Kenji ripped his weapon sheathes from his sash as he stepped away from the nodachi's thrust path, intending to beat the weapon right out of its hand.

As Kenji recovered and stopped on his feet, he took note of the weapon in the man's hands. It was a truly beautiful nodachi, a true master-crafted sword... He whistled at its apparent craftsmanship, wondering if it was human-made or demon-made, or perhaps created by another kind of being altogether. He had no time to ponder this thought further, however, and set the chest down to draw his swords, settling into a defensive stance. With no legs, tripping or lower attacks would not be options. Instead, Kenji determined his best bet would be to test this knight's abilities by making it attack first, readying himself to parry, block or evade as needed.

Kenji winced as the body fell atop him, but gave it no further thought as he shoved it off and hauled himself up to a stand. Picking his swords back up and sheathing them, he returned to the chest, deciding that now was the time to leave this room.

Kenji did his best to suppress the growing pain in his head, particularly his forehead, which may or may not be bleeding. He wasn't really sure. Grunting, he attempted to force the crawler off of him by rolling fast and hard to one side while its foot was in the air, then take advantage of its lost equilibrium by slicing and dicing its body.

Kenji felt the ground beneath him again, but this time, he did not backflip. Instead, he rolled to one side as the crawler came upon him, making sure he was on his belly when he stopped, and swung out at the landing monster's legs with Yawarakai-Te. If successful, or at least didn't get countered immediately, he'd stand and press the attack with quick, alternating thrusts from his swords.

The crawlers seemed to have been intimidated by Kenji's rousing success, though he did not think of letting it get to his head. He was in battle with eight monsters still, ones who were beginning to charge again. He'd thinned their numbers, now he needed to finish them off.
Wisely, the merc would not recklessly charge the oncoming enemy, but instead continue moving around fluidly, using his earlier tactic of reversing and counterattacking crawlers that attempted to strike him, and being mindful not only to avoid walking into walls, but of getting surrounded. If it seemed as if he was about to be surrounded, he'd take the nearest escape route and put distance between himself and the sea monsters.

Kenji calmly set the chest back down as he turned to gauge his enemies. Fifteen, including ten spry-looking fish monsters... No arms, which was good, though their agility could be troubling if he let them make like piranhas and swarm him en masse. He already had his stratagem in mind.
Settling into a fairly loose, mobile stance, Kenji strafed to one side of the oncoming horde, looking for the stragglers that had yet to merge with the main group. While keeping an ear on the rest, he made to cut down as many stragglers as he could with precise slashes, attacking crawlers and creatures alike.

Taking a moment to settle down, but maintaining readiness and awareness, Kenji began walking toward the other end of the room toward the Daimyo's chest. He kept his swords out, ready to strike anything that came at him at a moment's notice.

The cut across Kenji's back was shallow, but still stung. Yet another diminutive injury. He could get worn down if he kept racking those up. He did indeed turn, swords at the ready, and took careful note of the beast bearing down upon him. With a level head and reflexes on high, the merc - listening for the other beast as he did this - waited and swung a heavy overhead slash with his Yawarakai-Te as the airborne monster approached. Should he succeed, his masterwork katana is free to fend off the last of the beasts, and counter if given the opportunity.

Three monsters, two swords... This could be tricky, and end horribly if Kenji make a poor choice. At the same time, playing it safe could end in him getting sundered from one side, as he could only handle two. He decided to make a move that he considered equally safe and risky: pick one of the charging monsters and rush them with his swords, intending to cut himself a path out. In the worst case scenario, he theorized, he would only end up harmed by one while the other two would come up short. In the best, well...

Kenji took advantage of his apparent rest period to stretch, not having had the chance to do so before his engagement with the undead. When he heard the ghastly yells and looked to the walls, he found a curious quintet of demonic monsters ready to attack. He hadn't fought such creatures before, but he would not underestimate them. Settling into a defensive stance, he intended to block, dodge, and counter his new enemies' attacks as they came.

With little warning, Kenji found himself restrained and close to being impaled. He would not let this be the way he died. Not here, alone, in a long-abandoned castle. Summoning his might and will, he kicked out the legs of the undead on his left arm, then used its lack of stability to yank it in the way of the blade coming for his stomach. If successful, and he didn't have a new belly piercing, Kenji would proceed to hack away at the three undead as best as he could in order to free himself.

The moment Kenji felt himself hit the floor on his back, he immediately kicked his legs over his head and rolled backwards back to his feet. His arm stung a little, but it was of no real hindrance. Settling back into defensive stance, he decided the next best tactic would be to pick off one enemy at a time, cutting down the closest of the undead each time they came while backing away to keep out of striking range of the horde, making sure not to back himself into a wall or door.

When the foreigner turned his attention to the lady of the wood, Kenji decided to remain silent for the time, observing their exchange with keen interest. The man seemed to hold himself with an air of confidence and superiority, as if he were a nobleman, though it could be misinterpretation; they were strangers, after all, and had only been in eachother's company for maybe two minutes. Of course, the same could be said of the woman, who turned around the foreigner's reversed question.
Kenji tucked his hands into his hakama pockets, continuing to watch and listen, and occasionally glancing over at the falcon out of interest.

Kenji would indeed glance behind him to note the shroud of darkness concealing the door that he was, apparently, yanked through by an invisible force. "Well, that was new... the merc mused mentally, surprised, but not too bothered. It was when he redirected his attention forward, hearing the unholy wails of the dead, that he wondered what he was getting into.
No, that wouldn't do.
Steeling himself for battle, and letting adrenaline begin to flow within his veins, Kenji drew his Yawarakai-Te and stood fast against the charging soldiers of the dead. He stepped in toward their ranks as they came close and swept his blade fast across their necks, hopefully beheading their damned bodies. For those who survived, he stepped again as he drew his masterwork katana, alternating between parrying attacks headed his way and cutting into his enemies.
(( Summary: Attack while maintaining defense ))
