[[Yeah, just gonna have her tag along Haji. Makes sense.]] Apparently Haji had the intention of going to Numa Castles, and with the rumours going around about it, there was no way in hell she was going to let him go by himself. She feared not the rumours herself, but fretted over Haji, and so, filling her quiver to the brim and sharpening her blades, the woman tagged along.
She remained silent, expression impassive despite the screams and eeriness. When they entered, the woman immediately halted, eyes widening. She knew all of these men, and so did Haji. What in the actual fuck?
And at seeing another who knew her real name and gender, the girl immediately went rigid. The way her eyes bulged warned and begged Yukimura not to say anything.

There was nothing more to do for now, and so the woman masquerading as a man pulled out a chair and released a sigh. She had been having to do this a lot more recently. It was odd to heal those who she had shot, and to not kill them. And yet she did not dislike such a notion.
Running fingers through the hair at the top of her head, Katsumi answered Shou coolly, "Take him to the town to be incarcerated, along with the bounty. The authorities will take him in. What they do from there is not determined by me."
And she didn't particularly care. While she was changing due to Haji and even valuing life more, the mercenary wasn't going to turn a complete 180. She was still a trained killer, and while she did not like what she did, neither did the archer hate it. She saw it as a means to an end and that there wasn't anything wrong with it.
Shou wanted to take the weapons and Katsumi blinked, before fluttering her eyes closed and leaning back, shrugging nonchalantly. "Go ahead, Yamabara-san. As long as I can search the bounty's body for anymore evidence and for valuables, I care not in the least."
Needing to constantly be at work, Katsumi began sharpening the blades on her bow, cleaning the blood off from earlier. The injured man was shifting, groaning as he did so, and Katsumi commented, opening one eye before closing it when she was done, "Stay still and rest, and you will heal all the faster. Trust me. Don't want that stomach wound opening up further. Lucky nothing vital was hit."

Upon picking up the man and moving with Yamabara, Katsumi said with another nod, "I have enough experience."
She didn't particularly care to think about all of the injuries she had to fix on herself from her father's beatings, and when he was injured and unconscious from consuming enough alcohol, and so she blocked it out. Instead, the girl thought about her Haji, and the archer's heart warmed.
They entered the teahouse and Katsumi asked owner if they could have water and use their hearth. Readily accepting due to the two saving their lives, Katsumi moved over and set the man on the table. She then removed her supplies from her bag and Katsumi began making a salve with herbs she already already had. A pot filled with water was put over the fire, and Katsumi worked on crushing the herbs into more of a pasty consistency, answering the man, "The nearest village is the best bet. From there, we can find out where exactly to go. I'd assume one of the bigger towns."
She glanced over at him upon mentioning the morbidity of the situation, and looked down at bloodied bag. Katsumi had seen so much bloodshed in her short life that she didn't even bat an eye. Head raising up, her expression remained impassive, and her brows arched up.
"I can carry it, if you like. A head is far easier than an entire body."
Later, she would check the body for anything else that could help prove that this was, in fact, the bounty. For now, she finished making the salve and removed the hot water from the fire. Soaking some towels, the archer would inquire that Yamabara hold down the thug and proceeded to remove the arrows with her small hands, quickly yet carefully. Cleaning out the wounds with the warm water, she applied pressure to the wounds, especially on the one at his side. Katsumi did her work in silence, lids drooped slightly. She was clearly practiced in this.
"The blood flow will need to slow before I can use the salve and bandage you up," Katsumi said aloud, to no one in particular, although it was aimed as if speaking to the thug.

He spoke, and Katsumi nodded in response. Releasing a sigh, she glanced over at the injured man. Removing cloths from her bag, the archer tossed it over to the man, expression impassive, per usual.
"Apply pressure, and be sure to not remove the arrows," she said with raised brows.
He began to do what she said, and the archer strode over to the corpse of the bounty. His full body would be far too heavy to carry and, with a sigh, she removed a hunting knife. Making quick work of it, the woman removed the head of the fellow, wrinkling her nose in disgust, and put it in a bag. Tying the string, the petite girl stood up just as the other left the building, and she turned to face him.
The fellow introduced himself, and the mercenary bowed her head, a hand resting on her chest. Katsumi proceeded to give her alias, saying in a soft tenor, "Saito Hiroshi. And it was nothing, Yamabara-san.
She straightened again and nodded her head. "I could say the same."
Although, as of late, Katsumi had felt a lot stronger and her skills were quickly improving. The archer wasn't too sure as to why, and so she shrugged it off. Instead, the woman moved towards the thug, who was applying pressure to his side, where the arrow stuck out.
"I suppose we should move him into the teahouse. From there, I can tend to his wounds."

It seemed someone else had entered, telling Katsumi to fire, and she did not hesitate. The archer didn't bother looking back, closing one eye and, as the man holding the owner's wife moved back in surprise at the scene unfolding, Katsumi released her breath and released the string. With his taller frame, it hit the man's shoulder and his hold loosened on the woman, who cried out and forced her way out of his grasp. She ran towards Katsumi, heading back inside to hide with her husband, and the archer quickly moved forward, another arrow at the ready in moments.
The leader had stumbled down and struggled up, anger clearly contorting his features. Growling aggressively, he rushed towards her and Katsumi fired. An arrow embedded through the man's throat and, as his hands gripped helplessly at the lodged projectile, the man fell to the ground.
Swiveling around, prepared to take more down in an instant, she saw another man killing those around. He was taking care of the others fine, and her keen eyes searched, catching sight of the man she had hit earlier. The thug was fleeing, albeit slowly, and Katsumi shot at his heel. Hitting her mark, the woman quickly moved ahead and grabbed the man by the collar.
She stared down coldly at him, blade held against his throat to intimidate the now weeping man. "Is there a bounty on your head, or your group's? Anyone in here?"
His words were incoherent, blubbering at best, and the woman sighed before shaking him a little. Understanding the message, the man nodded and glanced over at who had been the one to take the woman hostage and Katsumi released the man. He wasn't going to be going anywhere, not with those wounds.
"Don't move and I'll tend to your wounds," muttered the archer. Of course, she'd still haul his ass off to the authorities, but it would give him the incentive to stick around.
Sheathing her dagger, brown hues glanced over at other man and, straightening her form, the petite archer bowed. "Thank you for your assistance, sir."
Standing up again, her gaze moved over to the dead leader and she continued, "He has a bounty on his head. I will... cut you half of whatever is being offered for him."

Why after avoiding it so well did trouble always seem to come to Katsumi? Even with her being disguised as a man, with her hair up in a high ponytail and the teen donned in a black kimono and charcoal hakama, with her chest wrapped, people kept seeming to want to mess with her, or somehow the archer would get dragged into trouble. Despite being impassive and serene, people seemed to desire to pick a fight with her. Katsumi wasn't sure if it was due to her small frame and short height or just because she was a warrior and people were asses and wanted to prove themselves, but it was growing annoying at best. Although, admittedly, Katsumi had stepped in with this case.
She had been minding her own business, silently drinking a cup of tea in the far corner of the building, when the owner left. The girl thought nothing of it, closing her eyes and sipping at her drink, when Katsumi heard a group come in... from the back? Lids fluttering open, her brows furrowed as what looked like a gang of thugs entered. They were quietly talking with the owner's wife, and Katsumi kept to herself, but after a few minutes things went to hell.
When the owner came back in, a thug went over to him and started beating on him. Katsumi's eyes widened. What the hell was going on? From the bits and pieces she was gathering, it sounded like the gang had been exploiting money from the couple, and this time they didn't have the proper amount due for their "protection." The wife was held back, and another thug neared the owner, holding a flame. Since her area was in the back away from them all and she was in the darkest corner, Katsumi hadn't been noticed yet, and she would take that as her advantage. She wouldn't simply sit here and do nothing. If they noticed her, they would attack, and playing the pacifist just didn't seem to set right with the girl.
Removing a few arrows from her quiver, Katsumi swiftly took her bow from her back just as one of the thugs began working on tearing down the place. The archer got up from her seat, and one of them men noticed her too late, pointing her out to the supposed boss. She had already taken aim and fired at the man about the torment the owner with fire, hitting him in the side and he dropped the torch, and as the others started to unsheathe their weapons, she began firing at them, eyes narrowed sharply.
To avoid getting hit, they scrambled out of the back, taking the wife, and blood trickled out of the man she hit. Telling the owner to hide, Katsumi took the arrows where she had missed her targets and rushed out. They were there with the wife, and her dark eyes caught sight of one of the men charging her. With great speed, Katsumi spun around to avoid impact from the katana, and she used her bladed bow to get past arms reach and disembowel him. Screaming out, the thug fell onto the ground and the others seemed appalled, shocked.
They were tensed, one holding a blade to the wife's neck, and Katsumi swiveled around, again taking aim. There was five of them, one of them bleeding out from the shot she made. The group seemed angry by her intervention, and the one holding the blade to owner's wife was shouting at Katsumi.
"This is none of your fuckin' business, twit! Get the fuck out of the way!"
Katsumi's expression was unreadable, and the woman disguised as a man didn't lower her bow, aiming straight ahead at him. In a false tenor, the archer uttered somberly, "Let her go."

Walking at his side, eventually Haji and Katsumi came into view of the port town and the ocean. Haji was quite excited, and the girl glanced over at him as he smiled widely. She hadn't thought about it before, but the archer supposed he had never seen the sea before. Looking it over again, Katsumi supposed it was quite beautiful. It had been about three years since she had seen the ocean and, in fact, it had been this very town. She had been on a job with her father, and they had left rather abruptly without him saying a word to her, not that that had been anything new.
“Mm,” the teenager said with a nod. Her slender arm was hooked in his as they were alone together on the road. There was a glimmer within her eyes as her keen eyes looked beyond at the horizon. “It has been a few years since I was here last. The beauty and vastness of the ocean certainly hasn't changed.”
As they neared the town, the girl removed her arm from Haji, but the petite woman stuck quite close to his side. Both humans, men, women, and children, and beasts passed them by, and Katsumi casually strolled beside her Haji, shifting her bag on her back. While somewhat tired, the archer was used to long periods of time traveling, and was fine with whatever Haji chose to do. And he decided they should get a room at an inn, to which she nodded in response.
They neared the inn and entered, and Katsumi was ready to pay, but Haji covered it. It had been on the pricier side, and Katsumi decided quietly to herself that she would be sure to cover other expenses in the future to make up for it.
When they were led to their room, her eyes took in the bedroom, which was a nice size and had two mats. She could easily move them together when they were alone and slept that night. Putting their things down, Katsumi began putting some of her things away, again nodding at Haji's words. It wasn't long before he was up on his feet and offered to get them food, to which she blinked and looked over at him.
“Ah, alright.”
A slight blush covered the woman's cheeks as he kissed her gently, and her hand rose to his face to have him linger a little longer before leaving. Katsumi then spent the time putting their items away and readying the room while he was gone. She was always one that needed something to do, whether it was running around or even something as simple as sharpening her blades, and as she glanced out of the window of their room at the inn, the archer knew she couldn't simply wait around. Katsumi doubted he'd be gone long, but wandering the block for a short time until he came back wouldn't hurt, right?
Writing a note just in case he came back before her, Katsumi then armed herself, always wanting to be prepared just in case, and the woman masquerading as a man left the inn, nodding at the innkeeper as she slipped out of the door. As she strolled the street, her curious brows hues took in the various sights and her dainty hands were placed within the sleeves of her black kimono, arms crossed over her wrapped and covered chest.
After purchasing a snack she figured Haji would enjoy later on, someone bumped into Katsumi and the woman stumbled forward a bit. A girl no older than ten stopped, quickly and profusely bowed and apologized, and ran off, and Katsumi merely blinked and nodded. Noticing the child dropped a straw doll, the teenager picked up the toy, turning it in her hands. Katsumi stood up and saw the girl quickly retreating, and the archer went after her, small form evading the taller individuals on the street.
“Wait. Child! Hold... Hold on. You dropp-” exclaimed the woman, but she cut herself off, knowing it was futile. The girl wouldn't be able to hear her, and so she kept going.
This kid was fast, and after several twists and turns, Katsumi found herself in a rather deserted part of town. She skidded to a halt and glanced around. Brows furrowing, the archer's lips pressed into a tight, firm line. Where the hell was the girl? There was absolutely no sign of her, and Katsumi moved out far further than she intended. In fact, she had absolutely no idea where she was.
Holding the straw doll to her chest, Katsumi called out for the child, searching for the girl. If she could just find the child and give her the toy, the archer could be on her way and head back to the inn, to Haji. As she passed by an alleyway, the girl heard a noise and stopped. Swiveling to the side, she peered within the alley, biting down on her bottom lip. It was dark and she took a small step forward. The girl wouldn't be in there, would she?
Katsumi's stomach gnawed at her and the girl took a step backwards. This didn't feel right. None of it did. There was no one around and the archer's intuition was screaming at her to get out now. But before she could make a move, three men jumped out of the alleyway at her.
Yelping, the teenager dropped the doll and stumbled backwards. Strong hands roughly grabbed at Katsumi and, despite trying to fight back, the petite female was easily overpowered. She was held against the front of one of the men, and as she kicked and screamed, a bag was placed over her head. One of them hit her across the head and Katsumi fell limp, and soon they carried her off, as another planted a letter making demands (not to Haji, but Katsumi's deceased father, who they believed to be alive) in Haji and Kat's room before slipping out.

[[OoC: Ah shit. I forgot again. Sorry for the wait! Dx -bows repeatedly-]] It was an honor for her? Katsumi wasn't even known, but apparently Ina was. She was supposedly a renowned fighter, and if the petite woman was more knowledgeable she probably would have known of her. If anyone was honored, it was Katsumi, and she was!
"It... It is an honour for me, Ina-senpai!" she exclaimed, finally gathering the courage to speak up. Her small hands tugged at the hem of her black kimono, and her dark gaze kept moving up to Ina's and falling away. "I... I haven't met many other archers, and... and never a woman who was one."
Ina really would be willing to show Katsumi what she knew? What she could do? Inner-Katsumi was jumping up and down, and the girl's heart was racing. "I... I would very much like to s-shoot with you, Ina-senpai."
It was like a dream come true, and one she never knew she could have before. And already so soon it was turning into reality. Katsumi was bubbling up with excitement and happiness, and, even with her face remaining rather impassive, with a hint of nervousness, her eyes were glimmering.

Katsumi internally winced at his booming voice, brows furrowing slightly. Did he even realize just how loud he was... and in a place of worship? Even with Katsumi's lack of faith, she had enough respect and knowledge to know to at least stay quiet. This man here didn't seem disrespectful by any means. Simply oblivious.
"The God of War, huh?" she inquired softly, brows arching up with interest.
The woman donned as a man blinked, turning her head to face him, and she stared with widened eyes. Did he seriously not know? How could so much pass over one person's head? She didn't even know how to respond, shifting uncomfortably and nibbling on her bottom lip. Fortunately, the man came up with an answer himself. However wrong it was, Katsumi wasn't going to correct him.
"Uhh... o... okay," she murmured, nervously looking at the monk's, not wanting to incite their rage, and the archer quickly followed after the oblivious man.
Upon leaving the shrine, Katsumi glanced back over her shoulder before looking back at the warrior. "Pardon, but what was your name again, sir? You, uh... weren't quite able to finish your introduction."

The arrows were knocked out of the air, and Takehiro engaged in combat. She removed three more projectiles and took aim. Dark hues narrowed sharply, and Katsumi bit down on her bottom lip. The archer was unable to shoot now. If she did, even with her skills Katsumi could hit Takehiro. And so the woman took a steady aim, searching for the right opportunity to bring down her target, and hopefully alive.

"Of course."
As Katsumi handed Haji the wine, the other man murmured in his sleep, begging for his mother's life. Her gaze turned to him and her eyes narrowed in the slightest, observing him as he shifted. A single tear slipped down his cheek, and her lips pressed into a thin, firm line. She had dreams where she would wake up crying, but it was to spare her life, experiencing flashes of her father's abuse. While their reasons and nightmares differed, the woman could sympathized, and she released a sigh.
Haji spoke and Katsumi sipped at her drink, listening intently. He was so idealistic, and Katsumi found it to be rather endearing. While she held hope for them and trusted her lover, and wished that he could be happy and attain such a world, the woman was realistic, if not pessimistic. Yes, she had met kind people as of late, but during times like these, and, for her knowledge, many people were barbaric. Looking back at history, there had always been war and trouble, death and despair, corruption and cruelty. Things would not change, no matter what. When there was no war, there was still crime and abuse.
But, despite believing all of this, Katsumi didn't have the heart to share such a harsh reality with Haji. He embodied all that was good, and sometimes it was best keep that purity, that naivety. Katsumi would hide him away if she could, and take on the brunt of the hardships and witness all of the evils for him. She had done so for years when it was just Katsumi and her father, and when she was alone, and would continue to do so now with Haji to keep him happy.
"Haji-kun..." Katsumi trailed off, gaze dropping from his and to her lap. Her fingers picked at the cup and a heavy sigh released from her lips. After a few moments, she looked back up at him, a seriousness glimmering within them, however soft and warm it may be. "One cannot fight the tide of a river. No amount of men can change its course. They must move with the flow. It is simply the way of the world."
Moving forward, a hand rested over his, and she gently gripped Haji's hand. "We cannot change what he fights for. We cannot stop him from doing so. Only he can, or death itself."
Her lover wanted to do so much, for the world and her, and Katsumi shook her head, voice low and quiet, down to a soft whisper, "Haji-kun, you... you do not need to change the world for us to be happy. I already am. People have lived in this world for thousands of years. We can do the same."
Brows hues moving over to the slumbering man, Katsumi leaned forward, lids drooping in the slightest. A hand rose up and gently caressed Haji's cheek, and she begged with a nod, "In case he wakes, Hiroshi... please."

Of course he smiled, unaffected by the lack of experience that caused her stomach to knot. Instead, his hand continued to caress her thigh and his other cupped her cheek. He spoke, and Katsumi's heart clenched, the emotions rising up again.
The woman felt the same. While one filled with distrust towards the world and its inhabitants, this man held every ounce she seemed capable of with where she was now. It seemed even doubly so, due to the fact that she never had anyone who loved her, with whom she could trust. Never once in her life had she felt so relieved, so relaxed, so... safe. To feel all of those things couldn't have made her any happier, and Katsumi already love Haji deeply for it.
She wanted to smile, and it showed in her dark eyes. "Neither will I, Haji-kun."
Despite her injury, and all logic and reason, and the fact that these two barely knew one another (and yet, he knew her more than anyone ever did in her life), Katsumi really wanted this, them. It felt right, for them both, and the archer's arms wrapped around him, hugging Haji. Bringing him close, her lips embraced his, this time softly, and one of her hands brought Haji's to the tie that held together her kimono. Separating from him, Katsumi nodded to show that, yes, this was in fact what she desired, and she closed the distance once more.

Mercs are sometimes hired by military groups, or something, aren't they? Especially back in the day, I'd think so. I'm not sure though. I very well could just be talking out of my ass. xD
And uh... well, I personally imagine that they would probably want to train with the faction. They need to be worked out and tested, as well. They are getting paid to fight, and for that money I would think the factions would want to make sure they are at the top of their games. Maybe...?

Hmmm... I see what you mean. I suppose I meant more of... if a mercenary is only temporarily joining a side, likely due to being paid, they would still be a merc. Unless stated otherwise, they would have been hired. ... Right? o.o
At least, that's what I imagine in the case of my own character. She wouldn't want to permanently be a part of the faction, and wouldn't even see herself being a member, as her working for them will only be temporary. She would always be a mercenary, first and foremost. At least, that's what I'm thinking. I very well may not be understanding any of this. Eh heh~
Sorry if I'm coming across as argumentative, or something! Just wanted to put my thought process out there. ^^;

I like that as well. Although, for mercenaries, perhaps the player could choose whether to keep the mercenary bonus or to drop it and take on the faction's? Just a thought there. ^^;

Yeah, I can see that being a problem. To avoid that, you could perhaps make it so that, while you can go on multiple sides (for mercs), you can only get a reward(s) once, to keep it fair.

This man was so... cheerful and excitable, and Katsumi pondered about why she was meeting so many of these types as of late, as they had avoided her all up until now. Even with being with Haji, it was hard for her to comprehend often times.
He threw the blade up, and Katsumi glanced up nervously. That didn't seem like a good idea, and she stepped back again, watching it warily. As she expected, it crashed on the floor, and the man was smiling sheepishly at her. Her brows raised, but not at what one would expect (although she was finding him to be odd, in a charming sort of way.)
The weapon had a name? Was this a thing? Every so often, Katsumi would hear of men boasting about their weapons and giving them titles, but she simple saw her bows and blades as just that. Weapons she used to kill, or to hunt. Was it a norm to do otherwise? To hold some sort of sentiment with the weapons? Such an idea seemed foolish to Katsumi, but she kept her thoughts to herself, per usual.
She nodded in response, not wanting to come across as entirely rude, and she listened as he continued to speak. The archer had noticed with his lack of use of an honorific that the monks did not seem to pleased, and she shifted a bit uncomfortably. Was this boy dense? While she may not have known the man, if he was a lord, an honorific would be expected all the more, and so she bit down on her bottom lip. Hopefully no one would clobber him over the head.
As he went on, one of the monk's yelled at him, and Katsumi winced, ducking down as if to hide away from the tension in the room. But all of what this stranger said was, well, rather interesting, and the girl in men's clothing scratched the back of her head.
"I'm... afraid that I've been so busy with training and... work that uh... well, I've rather neglected politics. But... I do recall Kenshin-sama being a renowned fighter. At least... that is what I have overhead."
Her father never cared about them, and so they were never discussed. She had heard a few things while on the road, but her lack of knowledge made it to be practically gibberish to her. So this Kenshin was the commander of the Uesugi forces. She recalled hearing at one point that he was a renowned fighter, and there was a flicker of desire to watch him in action, but she quickly stifled it.
Bowing her head, Katsumi introduced herself, using her alias. "I am Saito Hiroshi, and uh," glancing over at the irritated monk, she moved closer to him, pointing at the door, "I think they want us to leave."
She didn't want to tell him what it meant, since the man seemed nice enough, and so she hoped to lead him away from the others so things could settle down.

The archer made her way to the inn presumably before the others, not before stopping at a stall and purchasing a sweet roll. She was let into the kitchen, asking the wife of the innkeeper for certain herbs, and soon enough the child came in with the bucket of water. Katsumi gave two more coins to the young boy, and proceeded to hand him the pasty. His dark eyes lit up with excitement and ran off with the treat, resulting in Kat sighing a little in relief.
Transferring the water into a pan, she used the fireplace to warm the water, and gathered the herbs. Cutting them up, Katsumi began to make a salve, crushing the herbs and mixing them together. As she did this, the archer inquired about having some wine later in the evening, and the innkeeper's wife, who was well aware of the amount of money Katsumi laid down, happily agreed.
Soon enough, the salve was finished, and Katsumi took her supplies and headed to the room, with a young daughter carrying the salve and a preteen son carrying the warmed water for Katsumi. The entered the room and the kids bustled about, setting the items down, preparing the water, tidying up, and then leaving, as she set her things down and tidied up a bit, letting down and putting up her hair again more tightly and removing her tabi socks.
Upon leaving, Katsumi acknowledged Haji by going over to him with the salve and resting a hand on his shoulder, fingers squeezing gently. She closed her eyes, standing at his side for a few moments, wanting to take a brief break before diving back into work. The archer desired to kiss her beau, but shied away from any intimacy, hiding her feelings for him in public, even with the other man being unconscious. She never wanted to jeopardize them, or him.
Hand falling from his shoulder, the mercenary knelt to the ground and began her work. Removing the clothes, she proceeded to clean out the wounds with the warm water, before drying them off and rubbing the salve and applying pressure once more. None of them seemed to need stitches, fortunately, and she bandaged up the ones where the blood blow was minimal if not entirely halted, with skill one would not expect from someone her age. She had plenty of experience due to her father, and all of her harsh training and fighting. Not only did she have to tend to her drunken father's wounds, often when he was unconscious, but also her own.
The three wounds were eventually taken care of, and Katsumi leaned back, wiping her brow and releasing an audible sigh. Her lids drooped; she was tired, rolling her tense shoulders and neck, and then really desired that drink. Timing seemed to be perfect with the villagers of this particular town, and the innkeeper's wife entered with the wine. Pouring a few drinks, the woman left, and Katsumi picked up two, handing one to Haji.
"Haji-kun, would you like some?" she inquired. Her dark eyes slid over to the hopefully less rabid dog. "If he doesn't do anything stupid and rests, he should be fine. With a few days of rest, his wounds should heal up nicely."

I know at least for me, I definitely have gone with mercenary because 1) that really just fits my character ideas and 2) because I do not know the ideals of the various factions. I really do think it would further help people decide what they make their characters.
Personally, I am planning on having Katsumi help the Uesugi, and I would love to see a recruitment of sorts. For her to meet Kenshin. I would assume for mercenaries in particular that there would be training sessions, and testing to see if the fighters are fit. I would love for that to happen with Katsumi.
As for the rewards, EXP is always nice, as well as items and even money, but I think it should be left up to the discretion of the staff, taking into factor how much the roleplayer put into their thread and task, how long it is, and what the character is doing. I definitely trust the staff on all of that. So far all of the rewards I have been given, I felt were perfect and fairly given.

She was finally able to catch sight of their target, and he was planning for an escape! If they didn't get him now, they likely never could. Finally going full-speed, Katsumi would run ahead of Takehiro. She would skid to a stop upon reaching the start of the pier, whipping out her bow and two arrows. Pulling back the string and taking aim, Katsumi fired once at the bounty's shoulder before firing again at his right leg, hoping not to kill him but incapacitate the man.

The girl had never known someone so warm, so very good and sweet. His words kept causing tears to well up in her eyes and for her heart to feel as though it would nearly burst. She hugged him more tightly, as a result.
Her passionate kiss was met with a moan, and her heart fluttered. Katsumi loved hearing him make that sound, it excited her, and the archer found herself bringing her hand to his chest, sliding along his flesh, and slipping beneath his open kimono. She continued to kiss him and sighed, warm breath spilling over his neck, when his hand ran up and down her thigh. His fingers against her bare flesh felt like electricity, and Katsumi's arm went up, arching over his back, hand slipping beneath the fabric and running along his upper back. As she did this, Katsumi pressed her front fully against his.
She didn't really know what the hell she was doing, but the girl followed instinct. Katsumi wanted to get closer, as possibly as she could, and her hand left his, the two slipping his shirt over his shoulders to bare them. Fingers trailed over his chest and she blushed, both at being so forward and because she felt this way.
The kissing stopped and her cheek rested against Haji's collar. Katsumi's hand rested over his heart, feeling the beat, and she went quiet, pondering. The archer was sure now that what she wanted, what they were doing, or starting to, was what she had overheard so many describe. The intimacy with their wives and lovers that she would hear the other men discuss. A blush coloured her cheeks. Many of them had always sounded so vulgar, so crude. She had had no interest in learning about what they talked about. But this... what Haji and her were sharing now... it was far from what she imagined and what they said, and the girl bit down on her bottom lip.
A sigh released from her lips, and Katsumi decided to say what was on her mind, sharing her feelings like the rest of the night. Katsumi needed to be honest. She owed him that. Everyone seemed to have this kind of experience from what she could tell from the many conversations Kat had overheard, but she, well... didn't.
"H... Haji-kun. I... I really don't... I have no idea what I'm doing. I've just been... following what... feels right."
She moved away from his chest, hand still over his heart, and the archer peered into Haji's eyes, and Katsumi tentatively continued, "But I'm not sure if it is, or if it should."

Soon enough, the two were off, and Katsumi would have remained quiet much of the time. When they eventually made it to the town, her eyes looked about curiously, taking in the sight. New places fascinated her and quenched her curiosity while simultaneously causing her to crave more knowledge.
The two walked up to a nice home, much larger than anyplace Katsumi had ever been, and her small form was behind Sanada's as he knocked on the door. Despite sort of hiding behind Yukimura, the woman caught sight of Katsumi and the girl mustered up the courage to fully step into view. She was still dressed as a man, but her face was soft and Katsumi only stood at four-feet-ten-inches. Katsumi often caused people to raise their brows.
Seeing this other apparently extraordinary archer caused Katsumi to grows immensely nervous, eyes widening a little and throat clenching up, making it so that she couldn't utter a word. Her dainty hands nervously tugged at the sleeves of the black kimono, and Katsumi looked up expectantly at Yukimura, as she bit down on her bottom lip.
Was he going to give her real name? Should she be herself? Was she supposed to keep up her appearance here? She didn't see why he wouldn't considering the circumstances, but it created anxiety nevertheless, and Katsumi shifted in slight discomfort. There was much for her to process, and the teenage archer's head was swimming.

Seeing the wobbling from her peripheral vision, Katsumi's gaze moved over to the man balancing. He was falling backwards and emitted a loud exclamation. The girl jumped a little, startled, and leaped back. Another loud crash filled the air, and Katsumi visibly winced, dainty hands covering her ears.
When she opened her eyes, Katsumi saw that the tall man was looking up at her, and she blinked in response to his words. What now?
"Uhhh..." Katsumi shifted, hands tugging at the sleeves of her kimono. What he said seemed so odd to her, and his reaction, and Katsumi's gazed switched to the side. "I... did not come here for the restroom. I heard, presumably, your..." was it a sword? It was massive and she paused, staring at it, before her dark hues moved over to him, "weapon."
Rather oblivious to the politics going on, she tilted her head to the side. Unable to help herself, curiosity eating her up from the inside, the woman donned in men's clothing inquired softly, "Kenshin-sama? Is he just your master or everyone's here, if... if I may ask, that is?"
